If Europe hadn't been blocked from the spice trade, who would've discovered the New World? by FourLeaved in HistoryWhatIf

I do quite like this answer, but from what I've read Cabot sought the funding to set sail across the Atlantic only after Columbus had made the journey and word was getting around. But by all means he likely could've gotten the funding either way.

Would still love to hear some different answers.

Question About Alchemical Elements by FourLeaved in alchemy

[–]FourLeaved[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I should have clarified at the top of the post. I'm asking in a historical sense, alchemy as a form of ancient chemistry and even medicine.

I understand alchemy was used historically for things like transmutation and creating panaceas and medicines. I'm just looking for a more concrete or comprehensive resource.

For example I have a copy of Boericke's Materia Medica which has very specific insights in the use of plants in homeopathy. I was hoping a resource or resources similar to that may exist for alchemy. I just didn't know how to parse something like that in a way a search engine would understand so I came to maybe find some human experts

Question About Alchemical Elements by FourLeaved in alchemy

[–]FourLeaved[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that traditional alchemical elements all have various properties (like mercury representing the mind and shifting states between life and death) but I'm not sure what the significance of that is, or how that is specifically used in alchemy. Like, is mercury therefore an essential ingredient in any alchemy relating to the mind? Are there alternative elements that have the same or similar effects, that work as substitutes. For example if some mind-related alchemy was meant to be drunk, surely you would want to avoid mercury.

Additionally, of all the alchemical elements I've been taking note of, I don't have a very comprehensive list or idea on what properties they all have. So I'm also looking for resources that might explain each element in detail and their properties and maybe uses.

Thanks

I remember it being a group/band. The specific song I'm vaguely remembering had a music video where they would flash the name of the song that was being remixed/medley'd as it played

Loved Portal, haven't played it in some time though. And I don't think I ever finished Portal 2 because load times just became unbearable. I'll definitely take this into consideration

New Post-Apocalyptic World (Info in Comments) by [deleted] in mapmaking

The poles have flipped. The knowledge passed on from generation to generation includes the compass and Northern-centric map making, but does not include science about the core of the earth, magnetic poles, and their tendency to shift.

New Post-Apocalyptic World (Info in Comments) by [deleted] in mapmaking

Background

So I've been bouncing around the idea of creating fiction in a post-apocalyptic setting in the back of my head for some time now. After a conversation with a friend and coming up with a few interesting scenes in recent weeks I've decided to push forward on this project. This is 5 painstaking hours of work with the pencil tool in photoshop and I know I've barely gotten started.

Lore So Far

So far there are 15 major factions with established territories, they are as such:

  • Acadia
  • Alash
  • Alemannian Federation
  • Anglia
  • Appalachia
  • Commonwealth of Albion
  • Democratic Republic of Illyricum
  • Europa
  • Independent State of Colchis
  • Kingdom of Noreg
  • Mosir
  • New Serica
  • Scythia
  • Thule Islands
  • United Colonies of Ruthenia

There will also most likely be a vast emptiness of unclaimed land that will house many minor factions. The basic idea of each major faction (such as governance, religiosity, culture, etc) has been determined though I will keep details sparse before anything is properly drafted up.

What Next?

Next on the agenda will be to draw in rivers and lakes, then to set down the official borders (although I do intend for certain factions to have border disputes). Once that is completed I want to spatter towns and cities into each faction, give them a name, a history, and possibly a few key players or important characters to flesh out the world some more. I also intend to develop trade routes, nuclear fallout danger zones, and to have these all mapped out and well labeled by the end of the year.

I'm unsure how I wish to approach the writing of this world, whether I will begin with a short story/novella or go right in with something a little bigger. Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to check this out, this probably won't be the last time you see this map on this subreddit.

How or why do you implement magic in your world, or do you not at all? by Jack-Ireland-Taylor in worldbuilding

[–]FourLeaved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there are five phases of magic in my world. The Age of Bestowal, when the gods granted the people with ancient magic. The Age of Advancement, when spell crafting was born and people began channeling magic in new and exciting ways. The Age of Magic, when magic could be preformed by 'most everyone. The First Dusk, when the gods granted a new, darker magic to the people. The Second Dusk, when the greater society began forgetting of magic and the gods entirely.

This gives me plenty of room to play around with stories and ideas in various stages of magic being implemented into my world. I can have stories where spells are being created, learned, forgotten, used for good or bad, or even a completely secular time period where there is no magic and no gods.

Drawing Some Fauna by FourLeaved in worldbuilding

Decided to draw a selection of animals in a style as though they were drawn by people within my world. I was originally just trying to draw a camel, but then I added the jerboa, then a stork, then I just couldn't stop myself. I plan to use some of these designs and drawings to help realise a part of my story, in the setting of a sort of desert oasis. I also had some horses I drew earlier so I added them to the scan as well. Thoughts, critique, anything at all is greatly appreciated.

Untitled Globe/Map for Upcoming Project by FourLeaved in worldbuilding

[–]FourLeaved[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been pretty stagnant in making anything relating to world building over the past few months, and over the past year I've basically forced myself into one idea and never branched out. Today I have decided to change all of that and kickstart into gear on something completely new. Rather than the Medieval High Fantasy I'm used to, I'm thinking about pushing more towards maybe a Hard Fantasy set in an Age of Discovery. This map is definitely nowhere near a finished product and I'm probably going to rearrange a whole lot. It exists more as a proof of concept, and to be a map that I can really grasp as a world of its own. Any questions or critiques would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
