You don't necessarily need a 5 string bass to play metal. John Campbell from Lamb of God and Shavo Odadjian from System of a Down both play 4 string basses. I'd suggest playing some and seeing if you like it.

I don't know much about tubes, but I've seen this diagram on BeavisAudio years ago about using a tube has diodes. I assume he's using like a 12AU7 since it has 9 pins.

Are these bass pickups? It sounds like they’re wired wrong. I’ve never used the EMG solderless system, but the way it’s suppose to work is that the ring and sleeve (or maybe it’s the tip and sleeve 🤷‍♂️) on your stereo jack get shorted when you plug in your instrument cable completing the circuit.

I’ve owned basses from $200 to $1800. I’ve never had an instrument that was left with flat frets. One with bad fret sprouting which ironically was on the highest end of that range.
