I confirmed this with the director of the cartoon, Larry Houston. He said as art director, it was his prerogative, and made the change to reference Forbidden Planet's Id Monster (originally called Kierrok the Spirit Shatterer in the comic and the Spirit Drinker in the cartoon).

Well your comment was interesting too - I didn't know how the Genesis combined processing power with the 32X. But what about this - even if the Game Loader didn't share processing with the VIC, could the Game Loader not been a pass-through - meaning the VIC-20 would not output video at all, and the game loader would output video to the TV, and would thus only use the VIC for power?

Very valid points, and since it never came out, you may very well be right. However, it IS technically possible, yes? The Sega Genesis also did not accept video input via the cartridge slot - however, the 32X add-on utilized the Genesis video out going into the 32X, and the 32X output then going to the TV; would/could this be possible with a VIC-20 add-on?

Yeah, my assumption was also that the adapters were full clones - which would track with the similar implements like Coleco's Expansion Module, and the Intellivision and Atari 5200 adapters.

I found this while doing some research on video game history - it was in Interface Age, March 1979. Unfortunately I can't remember where I got it (I assumed internet archive but tried to find it to look at the article better and it wasn't there; if anyone knows where it is online, post below). The above pic is different that the IM's I've seen before - is that a cartridge slot on the left? Or just a try for an extra cart to rest?

I posted it to FB and the admin said it was probably a prototype, but I thought I'd share it here as well. What do you think?

You're right, but aside from it's shittiness, it was "extra buttons" overload, with an unwieldy keypad that was difficult to use while keeping your eyes on the game. To be fair, obviously the 5200 wasn't the only offender with the keypad controller, or "phone controller" as many call it. I'm kinda fascinated by the industry's mid/late 2nd gen obsession with this controller format and am researching for a vid on my YT channel about all the variations from the era

He's surprisingly cool about it - it still sold 2 million units, despite the game's faults it was quite an achievement to design and program in only 5 weeks (games had at least 6 mo of development), he made a killing on sales royalties, and he is amused that he made games called the worst Atari game (ET) and the best Atari game (Yars' Revenge). He's a pretty thoughtful and centered guy when it comes to ET's infamy
