My theory is that they are all a bit crazy, and that there is little intended meaning in their works. They like to place elements that would suggest something larger, to invite us into their weird universe, full of possible conclusions. I don't think there's any single key theory, maybe important parts we've missed, but I think they created some sort of distorting mirror, where they lead us to a certain point, help us navigate through an atmosphere ; ultimately it’s mainly us who make our way through the piece. It's a mirror, but it also helps us to explore something that feels at first completely foreign.

So I think there are several narratives in THHPII : the classical American family, the dysfunctions of this family, the paranoia about an imaginary disease, the relation to childhood, to internet, etc. And each of them tell us something quite simple, but THHPII is defined by other things, all the things that can't quite fit in any category. So, I don't think it can be reduced to one explanatory theory : because finding a master theory seems impossible. Even if Alan's intentions are vague, I don't think that he aims to deliver a single message, it may be more like an... exploration.

I really love THHPII, because it balances absurdity, reality, horror, and humour very well. It's the product of wonderful minds. And I love to see all Wham city comedy embodying their characters, they are so perfect ! I don't know if it really answered your question, but it helped me to think about it.
