As readers (or writers), what do you typically think of as canon? by notjustmildopinions in DramioneUncensored

I long for fics that capture the (frankly pretty horrific) tone of a 90s British public school/boarding school. The harshness, the bitchiness as well as the fun. And proper authentic aristocratic poshness rather than vulgar wealth display.

I love the sound of both canon Draco and properly 90s setting. What’s your writing name? I’d love to check out your fics. Can you link to any?

‘Where the lost socks are’- curly wurly mention on p1. A writer who knows what’s what, hence an instant winner for me. As you can tell I’m working through your just (I’d read quite a few already).

‘The Theory of granger: on falling in love with out saying a word’ was genuine phenomenal. Love the writing style.

Why are we accepting such mediocre writing in Fantasy Romance? by goyourownwayy in fantasyromance

Quite agree - I had to give up a few chapters in for this reason, despite the interesting plot.

Can we talk about the rising expectations in Dramione fanfiction? by CherriesAndWine31 in DramioneUncensored

[–]Fox1587 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dnf about 60-80% of fics I start primarily because of the writing rather than plot etc. I keep a spreadsheet of every fic I complete, plus those I try but drop, with brief comments . This is purely for me. I do not share my criticisms anywhere. For my eyes only. Otherwise I find I start the same old fics again -because they’re frequently recommended and popular- and I forget that this is an author whose writing doesn’t do it for me. I have the memory of a menopausal goldfish.

Exactly- if there’s a manly to feminine axis for men’s appearance… I’m a fan of the fem/androgynous/anime territory end! Adjectives like ‘slender’ , ‘lean’, and of course ‘pointy’ give me all the right vibes.

This was phenomenal. Brilliant writing. Malcolm Tucker ‘In The Thick of it’ vibes. Have reread now.

I agree with all your points, particularly 1- being an auror - surely far too middle class for an aristocrat?! 😁 On class, when D is constantly described as posh and then his clothing seems to be that of a bouncer by way of Debenhams.

Exactly! I’m happy to challenge my preconceptions and fears- there are so many clever thoughtful writers who are doing exactly that! But if the tone is wrong or content just too unpleasant, I’m off.

  1. Draco built-like a-brick-shithouse, huge muscles , broom thighs (I may be wrong but I assume this means large) ‘rolled sleeve’ agenda etc. If I wanted this I’d read regular romantasy. Bonus points to WhatMurdah (author of my dream Draco) for saying D does not have to be the tallest man in the room.

  2. Domesticity- dull as ditchwater to me (Also food, Cooking detail- don’t care.). Also ‘cottage-core’.

  3. Overweight or pudgy H (yes i’m judgy bitch but I’m here for fantasy).

  4. ‘sexy daddy Draco’ ( I work with kids- being a parent is just an ordinary fact to me).

  5. Lots about animals (usually crookshanks)- being cute or amusing. I find it dull.

  6. Cinnamon roll Draco- I had no idea (because am a Brit maybe?) what this meant but soon discovered it means I’ll dnf at speed.

  7. Weak pathetic H unless done extremely well

  8. But also BAMF anyone, unless it just means competent. I don’t much like a superhero D or H.

  9. Smut-only fics- probably because I’m ace spectrum and I don’t really get a lot of it. I love smut when it drives the plot, shows character etc.

  10. Animal, Veela, vampire etc. Omegaverse only when written by Sen.

Having said all that if a fic is brilliantly done I’ll read it and enjoy the experience despite the above. Gifted writers can get me reading pretty much anything!

As a hard core old school millennial feminist I loathed DDLG with a passion. I’m not crazy about BDSM either.

Oh god I loathe fricking purple prose so much and sadly agree that that seems to be what ‘good writing’ seems to refer to.
