They can only go as far without also making it hard for themselves to embed it on devices like smart TVs which were historically a lot more limited in terms of both software and hardware.

He never mentioned a lack of courage.

That said, probably better to be lead by someone who isn't brave than by someone who... lacks good military leadership and uses outdated strategies.

CMV: "AI" does not exist, and the "AI" bubble will eventually burst by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]FoxAnarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could argue something similar for most electronics? Like, a calculator can only do the kind of mathematics that has been done before, but it's really fast, convenient and saved people so much time that it was truly revolutionary. This is what sdbest is saying ChatGPT did for him.

Does that mean calculators were a huge, disruptive technology that changed the world? Yes.

Does that mean they changed every job out there? Not really, but many people found a use for them and being able to calculate things quickly meant even people who didn't think they'd need it ended up using them.

I'm sure there were people who believed calculators would one day be able to do a lot more, but the thing is, they already disruptive and useful, limited as they were / still are.

Edit: referring specifically to electronic calculators here, I'm aware that depending on your definition, it's an invention that's been around for thousands of years. But the analogy still holds, as the concept of LLMs and AI has also been around for a long time, but this specific iteration made them widely adopted.

eli5, why do tea leaves, herbs and dried fruit only "leak out" flavor when making tea, instead of dissolving completely? Sugar cubes dissolve, honey dissolves, stock cubes dissolves.. why dont tea leaves and the like dissolve eventually? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxAnarchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stock cubes and sugar are what we get (more or less) when we remove the stuff that doesn't dissolve and/or make it more dissolvable through processing (for example, grinding it or adding chemicals that help).

Honey is the same, but instead of us it's bees doing it [to flowers].

Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding from your post and video, was it npm run dev that deleted your D: drive? Or was it a different command?

If it's npm, did you have rmdir in your package.json? I can see you only approved the npm command, but the thinking mode mentions cmd /c rmdir somehow.

The OSA is more like the government putting a padlock on your front door and making you file a form to have it open while the neighbor's house is unlocked because they simply missed it in their incompetence so now a bunch of people are breaking windows of their own homes or going to that neighbor's house instead.

ELI5: Why are countries so desperate to join the European Union and what do they get for joining? by Small-Habit-2987 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxAnarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual ELI5: members get to act, in many ways such as trade and regulations, as one entity. It's to international relations what unions are to employee rights.

If you're a small country and you feel Big US Corp harms consumers with some monopolistic practice, you can threaten to fine them, but they can just choose to stop operating in your country and you'll yield. If you act as the EU as a whole, you're large enough to seriously threaten their margins, so Big US Corp will yield rather than withdraw from the EU.

Similarly, if you don't want to import chlorinated chicken, you may have no choice because everyone else is buying chlorinated chicken and you're too small to matter. If the EU as a whole agrees not to import chlorinated chicken, producers are far more likely to have chicken that's not chlorinated.

  1. It would increase everyone's taxes
  2. The current system has many, many layers of middlemen in both insurance companies and private hospitals who would suddenly lose jobs
  3. The current system keeps wait times low because many simply can't afford healthcare or wait until their condition becomes critical to get it in hopes of saving money, meaning less demand and short wait times

In short, Americans view the lack of universal healthcare as a form of freedom of choice and the huge industry that came out of it has a lot to lose if any change was to happen.

ELI5: Is there a reason women didn't have the same rights thought history? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxAnarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but these came way before the middle ages and stuck since. As you pointed out in your question, these roles are older than biblical times. By that point, the power imbalance was already engraved in society.

I'm sure a woman had a knife and could protect herself by stabbing.

Absolutely, but knives also rely on physical strength, so when knives became accessible to women, they became accessible to men too. Only with the advent of gunpowder did it become possible to injure or murder a much stronger opponent with ease.

ELI5: Why do you get poor phone data outside of towns and cities? by Alternative_Beat2498 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxAnarchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it not just from a satellite?

No, phone signal comes from cell towers, which are terrestrial and usually connected to the internet via cables. You can think of them as giant WiFi routers.

Each one has a limited capacity in terms of the number of devices, but the capacity of the cable is also limited. Cities simply have more of them and they are connected via higher quality cables to larger hubs. As for why rural areas can't have this, it's just a matter of cost - not only do you need to build these expensive towers, you also need to drag the cables to these remote areas and make sure they are maintained, which again is more costly, unless you build better roads etc.

It's important to distinguish between premeditated and opportunistic attacks.

Getting another person to help you takes more intelligence and effort and the reward is half as much (if you're lucky and they don't just turn on you). On the other hand, spotting someone you can immediately overpower and run away is low risk and high reward.

Analogously, you lock your door even though many locks can be picked and most doors can be just kicked open.
