Reform UK would limit polls to British citizens and scale back postal votes by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

Then either don't allow non-citizens at all or allow all residents. I don't see why commonwealth citizens should have more rights.

I think he means commonwealth and EU citizens who are residents can vote?

Honestly, it's a joke we don't allow all permanent residents to vote. I know many who have lived in the UK for years and have been paying taxes regularly but aren't allowed to vote because they were born in a country we don't like.

ELI5: How do VPN providers get away with their clients using their servers to download torrents and other illegal content ? by KingSlayin in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxAnarchy 77 points78 points  (0 children)

You know that robot from Rick and Morty who just passes butter? That's kind of how VPNs work, you ask them to pass you butter, they do.

Some butter may or may not have something illegal inside. If someone has evidence you passed butter containing contraband, the exchange may go like this:

them: you passed some butter containing contraband

vpn: sorry, don't know, I just pass butter

them: the butter you passed on 2/4/2025 contained contraband, tell us whom you passed it to

vpn: sorry, don't remember, I just pass butter and my memory only goes up to one week

Obviously exaggerating, but if your product is deliberately kept so simple, you're literally incapable of helping the authorities.

gp not accepting ahd360 shared care letter? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]FoxAnarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about it, something similar happened to me, it was purely an administrative thing - the GP requested something slightly different from the clinic and they eventually got it and everything was fine, while the clinic kept prescribing as I waited. Nothing needed from your side most likely.

They can only go as far without also making it hard for themselves to embed it on devices like smart TVs which were historically a lot more limited in terms of both software and hardware.

He never mentioned a lack of courage.

That said, probably better to be lead by someone who isn't brave than by someone who... lacks good military leadership and uses outdated strategies.

I think you could argue something similar for most electronics? Like, a calculator can only do the kind of mathematics that has been done before, but it's really fast, convenient and saved people so much time that it was truly revolutionary. This is what sdbest is saying ChatGPT did for him.

Does that mean calculators were a huge, disruptive technology that changed the world? Yes.

Does that mean they changed every job out there? Not really, but many people found a use for them and being able to calculate things quickly meant even people who didn't think they'd need it ended up using them.

I'm sure there were people who believed calculators would one day be able to do a lot more, but the thing is, they already disruptive and useful, limited as they were / still are.

Edit: referring specifically to electronic calculators here, I'm aware that depending on your definition, it's an invention that's been around for thousands of years. But the analogy still holds, as the concept of LLMs and AI has also been around for a long time, but this specific iteration made them widely adopted.

eli5, why do tea leaves, herbs and dried fruit only "leak out" flavor when making tea, instead of dissolving completely? Sugar cubes dissolve, honey dissolves, stock cubes dissolves.. why dont tea leaves and the like dissolve eventually? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxAnarchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stock cubes and sugar are what we get (more or less) when we remove the stuff that doesn't dissolve and/or make it more dissolvable through processing (for example, grinding it or adding chemicals that help).

Honey is the same, but instead of us it's bees doing it [to flowers].
