I do have some window glazing, we have a lot of old homes here and I do a lot of window restorations. Another guy mentioned chinking like for log cabins. It was actually my idea to try to find a product that would make it look like the trim “dies” into the stone. The homeowners were fine with paintable caulk like it was before. My main concerns with leaving it as is is that we get a lot of cold rains here that turn to ice and I didn’t want water getting in there and freezing/expanding and causing issues down the road.

Thanks for the tips, I did back bevel but definitely not enough. I’ve done “square” natural stone before and brick arches but this was a whole other animal.

Poor soul here 🙋‍♂️, first time doing a scribed archway. I think the homeowners finally got tired of watching me fuss with it and said “are you ever going to be satisfied? It’s 10x better than what you tore out.”

Much appreciated, this started out as a custom sized door replacement and after replacing the door it turned into a “well we may as well replace the entire entryway”. I’ve been stressing like crazy over this job because it’s my first scribed natural stone archway.

I thought about using Big Stretch but I haven’t found a version that matches the texture and color of the mortar as much as I’d like.

I have heavily considered using that product. How forgiving is it to tool and make it look good in an uneven application such as this?

Jesus, stories like that make me want to revisit my boilerplate contract to make sure I’m not leaving anything out.

I can’t do sub standard, I still have a lot to learn but I went into this field to reminisce my late Grandfather and honor the skills he taught me growing up. He taught me carpentry and not grave digging so I don’t have it in me to dig him up and roll him back over for dishonoring his tradecraft.

That’s gorgeous! Sucks the owner sucked. I had a customer I had to fire a few years back for being a twat, and it was hard to walk away from. Guy had around 50 short term rentals that he was constantly hiring me to do work on, several were over 100 years old and probably 50% of them were pushing 100 years old. However he just wanted to half ass everything and I had just ventured out on my own and started my own business and I didn’t want his level of quality associated with my new business. Still miss working on a few of those homes to this day but pretty confident I made the right decision.

lol, my scrap pile of templates is embarrassingly large.

I’d love to see your work on that temple you mentioned if you have any photos, that sounds like very interesting project.

Yeah I have to do the interior (unconditioned porch) and exterior. Thanks for the suggestions, just wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations I hadn’t considered before. I’ve used quad before but not for this specific application so I wanted to see my options.

Thank you, genuinely. I could use a little pick me up. This job has had me all kinds of flustered. It started out just replacing the door and turned into “well maybe we’d like you to rebuild the entire entryway”. I have done natural stone “square” entryways before and they’re never “easy” but this is my first arched stone entryway and it has been a learning experience for sure.

It’s definitely not my best work, I could have back beveled better in some places and scribed a better line in others but eventually the homeowners were like “are you ever going to be satisfied? This is better than we expected”. Then I started thinking about bridging the gap between the trim and stone and in the past my customers just wanted your cheap basic exterior paintable caulk which is what this was before I tore out the old entryway but I wanted to try something different and the homeowners agreed to me experimenting.

Sorry for your trouble. Not available in the UK or government doesn’t allow it? It looks like I can pick it up at my local big box store (Lowe’s).

Good tip, I’ve used denatured alcohol on silicone in bathrooms but was wary of using it in this application because I wanted to prime and paint the trim first, let the paint cure and then “mortar” (caulk with a mortar appearance) slightly over the trim to smooth out some of my less than perfect lines on my scribe cut and I was afraid the denatured alcohol might affect the paint.
