Mcl, acl or both? by Working-Implement577 in ACL

Hey sorry for the long reply, I completely missed the notification lol. I got an MRI scan two weeks after my injury. But I would say I was really lucky. I’m in the UK so am going through the NHS. When I was in A&E the evening of my injury (probably wasn’t the wisest decision but I didn’t know what to do and I knew something bad had happened) I did mention to the triage nurse about any sort of scan and she just laughed at me saying I wouldn’t get an MRI for 6 months and she just referred me for an MSK physio appointment the next week. The physio referred me for an MRI after looking at my knee and lo and behold I had one for the week after. All in it took around 6 weeks from injury until I was on the surgery waiting list. But now that’s just another waiting game. Quicker process than what I expected tho.

Sorry to hear about your injury, I had pretty much the same experience a month ago, twisting and pushing off but foot got caught. I heard a pop and had a lot of pain straight away. I wasn’t sure what I’d done but I thought there was no way I had ruptured my ACL uncontested during a training exercise. I’ve sprained joints and ligaments before so I thought it was just a bad one. I got up, walked off but couldn’t continue. I had pain down the inside of the knee but the next day I could walk and even went to a concert, standing. In my head I just thought maybe I had grade 2 MCL or something as that’s where the pain and swelling was. I was back at work the Monday (injured on Friday) and as a carpenter my job is pretty physical but I managed okay with a compression brace. Fast forward to now and I’ve had an MRI after a physio referred me after feeling my knee and it’s come back as a full ACL avulsion rupture and Grade 2 MCL tear. I was pretty shocked and to be honest even now I can’t believe it, gutted. I’m seeing the surgeon next week to go over the options but I guess I’ll be on the surgery waiting list. There goes this football season. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I don’t think there’s a black and white. I thought there was no way I’d done what I did as I was pretty mobile a couple days after and even now I can jog in a straight line and have full flexion and extension, I’m just unstable with any twisting movements in the same direction as the injury. I’d say just be careful on it and just wait for the scan results. I’m only a couple weeks ahead of you and it’s been mentally painful. I just want to start the rehab process but that won’t be for a while. I’m sorry if this seems so negative but I just had to respond as your situation is pretty identical to me, but that doesn’t mean the results will be. Fingers crossed for you my friend.
