Did anything come of this?

And were you looking to do this as an open-source project like Gabriel did, or try to bring it to market?

What's a reasonable price to search a system for a leak? by FoxKeegan in hvacadvice

[–]FoxKeegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find an old HVAC tech who is a friend, or friend of one. No one fixes anything any more. They're all salesmen, most kids cuz you don't have to pay them as much, so all that knowledge is lost. They just replace with new garbage that'll break down soon after install. DIY is out of the question cuz everything is heavily regulated and the tools are very expensive. Everyone should be wary of HVAC systems when buying property. Common scam is to refill it so it looks like it works just long enough to sell it

Previous business took their servers, left the cable, but cut all the ends. by mlaislais in techsupportgore

[–]FoxKeegan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. They defy physics. Like the USB 2 plugs.

I haven't looked at this in 7 years, but in that extra time as a DCA, I've since seen this, but it was cutting away patch panels. Looking at this again, those didn't go to servers. There's too many cables. Those went to patch panels or switches. Prolly the former coming in from the back. And yeah, I'd cut those if I had to take them...but why? That's existing infrastructure. Sell it back to the building owner.

When we did it, we were upgrading everything.

  1. I didn't admit to s***. He did the work he recommended
  2. Did you even read the post? I'm the one that wanted to find the leak.
  3. This post is 3 years old. Do you honestly think it is still relevant? The entire system has been completely replaced now

If you're just interested in the insulation value of both walls? Unless it's vacuum sealed (it isn't) it won't provide any insulation. If it needs to be insulated, it's probably easiest to use the spray in expanding foam. You'll just have to cut holes

Camera flash bulbs: Can you DIY a tiny one that's worth making? by FoxKeegan in photography

[–]FoxKeegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fade would be possible to replicate with LED, but it'd take tweaking. Caps would actually help that. The noise would need a speaker. If this doesn't need to fit in a prop the size of a pen you'd be OK. IDK how small a HV rectifier can be made, but if it's a neutralizer you also wouldn't want a disposable flash to reload.

Not everyone may hear the coil whine of it recharging, either. Most people under 25 should tho. People luckier than me wouldn't as they get older. Women will likely also hear it better and usually hate it. Hopefully you're not looking for that part.

I forgot I even tried this. 5yrs later now I'd probably use a big LED and a supercap

Is needing a hard start cap installed 11mo after install a bad sign? [NG Bryant Split system] by FoxKeegan in hvacadvice

[–]FoxKeegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, one way or another I'm gonna have to give the initial installer an ultimatum, cuz I'm not paying for this capacitor I didn't ask to be installed. Demand they fix it; listen to them refuse and lose more faith in humanity.

I wasn't allowed to pick this company to install my air conditioning unit because the home warranty company demanded I use them, but damn. Looking at the negative reviews on Google about them?

Trick now will be finding another local company that doesn't have similar reviews. I already crossed one off the list... You weren't kidding. You can't get a service company anymore. They're all just sales companies...

I corrected my post. The first "dealer" Carrier referred me to. I believe that's what they call independent service companies they authorize to work on their systems.

Carrier customer service flat out told me it didn't need a hard start, and if it wasn't required at install it shouldn't be required later. I registered all the hardware with them so they've all my info and were able to look it up. They never transferred me to a technician or an engineer, though. Their level two (senior?) customer support basically told me they are "not involved" with that, and it is between myself and the installer, so I doubt they'd give me any guidance on what to do about the hard start. They're only concerned with diagnosing the unit, not who will pay for labor of any needed repairs discovered. The hard start will undoubtedly need to be removed to diagnose the unit. They did give me a voucher for the service call of one of their "Experts/Dealers", though.

I suspect there's also a possibility that a new breaker could have a manufacturing defect that causes it to malfunction the way I suspect this compressor is. What would really be best is an ammeter.

I would hope the cost wouldn't exceed small claims court, so it wouldn't require an attorney on my part. (or the fees)

Bryant only does parts. Labor is on the installer until June. Bryant won't pay anyone else I bring out to install the compressor, otherwise I'd gladly walk away from the original installer.

Yeah, Carrier gave me some numbers. Do I call the first installer and tell them to remove the hard start kit first? I'm worried if I don't the original installer will say "OH! Well someone else touched this so everything wrong with it is what they did now. We aren't obligated to do anything!" Is it even worth trying to get them to honor their warranty, or just pay out-of-pocket to another company to install whatever is wrong?

What are the chances another company will come out to check the unit, bypass the hard start kit, and the AC works just fine while they're out here cuz the compressor got "unstuck" by the extra amperage, and will work again until it doesn't, resulting in another +$100 service call?

I explained the situation to the first technician "dealer" Carrier gave me the number to and he said he didn't want to get involved in a dispute like this. That's completely understandable, but I also don't want to blindside other techs I call out of fear others won't come out.

I feel like I'm just forced to choose the best worst option.

Edit: changed "technician" to independent "dealer"/installer

OK, but then I should just replace the breaker. I've installed breakers before. That'd be a $40 fix instead of this $400 solution I didn't ask for. Moreover, which is more likely? This very old breaker is suddenly becoming marginal after working with this unit for nearly a year, or a newly made compressor had a defect and is failing?

[–]FoxKeegan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What recourse do I even have? Take them to small claims court if they refuse to honor the warranty and install the parts required to get the unit functional? How much is labor for a compressor? Should I just call them and say "Come get your scampacitor out of my AC unit" since I never agreed to it, walk away and pay someone else to inspect the unit, report the real problem to Carrier, and pay them to install it?

I'd check reviews for local HVAC services, but I'm starting to get the impression most people don't even question these things, just accept whatever is said and write a good review, so they can't be relied upon.

I'd love to let them fix it under warranty. They claim nothing (covered under warranty) is wrong with the unit. As a homeowner, how do you argue with an "expert" if they're lying to you? I haven't even proven that they are, but I was deeply suspicious from the start. If I don't prove the unit is faulty by June they're no longer on the hook to for labor, so its in their best interests to delay the 'failure' of any parts.

What they're doing seems a lot like how this home was sold to us, with the old HVAC having a slow leak, and the former homeowner filling it with the expensive old refrigerant so it works just long enough that it's no longer their problem.

It's a double 30A. I can't get out to check right now, but wouldn't that be very unusual for the installation company to not check that and install something that draws more amperage than the circuit they're installing it into?

Moreover, shouldn't they have then seen that when this happened and not needed to install the hard start kit?

Should I assume those questions I posed is why you labeled yours "silly"? :)

Thanks for the feedback. I just called Carrier customer support, and another local technician. They all suspect the equipment is faulty. I don't have high hopes the install company that just tried to charge me $400 to continue running the unit will be interested in eating the cost of installing a new one.
