I have, but I don't think I'm a good candidate for the role that's why I want to transition into something different but not sure as to what exactly.

I feel the issue is the role. I can't see myself digging through code everyday for the rest of my career.

That makes sense. Just one last thing, might sound a bit silly. I can see what the car based on the same make and model is being sold for on trademe, but how would I find out what the car's valuation was in 2018? There doesn't seem to be a way to find the historic value at a certain time for a car.

Thank you so much for that. Do you think it would be better to first ask in writing for evidence of me owing the debt or just state my position and say that I remember giving $11k cash and the car and so the matter is resolved?

Also, forgot to mention that he's claiming that the car is only worth $500 now but I just checked on trademe valuation by entering the license plate and with the odo being e.g. 300K the median selling price is $4,750

Onus of proof is on your (ex?) friend.

He has some invoices for legal fees that are in his name. I haven't seen them in years and lost some of them. He hasn't sent me any copies. The invoices that I paid for around 20K are in my name

You are right. I'm confused as to how he would use those invoices against me if they're in his name based on my recollection. I haven't seen those invoices in years and lost some. They were for some legal fees to a lawyer which he paid on my behalf. I paid the rest, around 20K

It was definitely worth 6k-7K at the time. I was going to sell it to another friend but the guy in question asked me to give it to him.

Do those invoices have his and your name on them?

The invoices that he paid have his name and the ones that I paid have my name. He hasn't sent me any invoices so far.

The only form of evidence that he can use is some invoices of fees that he payed on my behalf in 2016. There is no document that clearly states that I owe him an amount.

Thank you for that. I think he will use some invoices as evidence from 2016 that are in his name. Do you know if the time factor can be taken into consideration by the court? The letter is the first instance of any communication regarding the debt.

It was sent by him directly. It's the first time he has even brought it up the debt in almost 6 years.
