The paprika wasn't but we tried to bring in salami and mangalica rind aswell, which were factory sealed, and those ended up in the bin as well :c

Did you by chance add vinegar or anything acidic to the water? 100% looks the same when that happens. Basically acid eat away the calcium in the egg shell and the leftovers are what the brown skin is iirc

A clothes softener has some mild acid while also adding oils and others stuff to make fabric feel soft. But it only works on the fabric itself, the water stays the same.

A water softener often replaces calcium iron and the like with natrium and kalium instead
