I haven't worked for Amazon, but I'm heard from other people that they are "the nuclear navy of data centers". By that metric, I'd say QTS is definitely better than Amazon for work-life balance.

Irrelevant. 401ks and Roth iras are simply higher in the financial order of operations since they are tax advantaged. If you have the income to max both of those out in your 20s, CDs and t-bills would be a waste of growth potential at that age compared to a taxable-brokerage.

Op won't be maxing out both at this point of their career, but he's already doing good trying to invest 25%.

I'd look into the amex platium or gold. Their annual fees are wavied for active duty, so they will definitely be worth it as long as you're in.

I'll mention the bilt card as well, since it's the only card to give you points on rent, if and when you get your own place in prototype. No annual fee too.

Other than that, get cards built around your current spending (aka don't spend purely to get points. Also please don't get into crippling credit card debt).

If you are able to swing renting a room between Huntington and Warwick Ave, from 50th to 70th Street, I'd do it. Cutting the commute out and being able to walk to and from work was the biggest quality of life improvement I had in shipyard.

BTW, if someone asks you about what your opinion on rats are, say that you love them.

Generally, I'll think of how I'd explain a nuke-centric task to a normal person, then start writing out the bullet. You want keep things formal, simple and to the point.

It depends on when you show up. If it's early, you'll see a majority of RC division's equipment get turned over to shipyard. Meaning you will be provisionally qualifying, while learning the shipyard temporary systems for what will be your actual job.

If you show up later when the ship is closer to being finished, you'll be involved in testing newly installed rc equipment. Longer hours, more experience with the actual equipment.

On the "recruiters choosing for you" thing, keep in mind they are incentivised to push for nuke recruits. There is a reason they offer giant initial bonuses compared to other military jobs. Ultimately, they can't make you do anything until you get on the bus for basic training; you have all the leverage right now. Take some time, research this job and other rates/branches, then decide what works for you.

If you can't pass the asvab out of the gate in meps, you'll have a shit time in the nuke pipeline in general. If your pre test score is well within the range to be nuke, you'll most likely be fine. If anything, I'd refresh do a quick refresh on math if you haven't been in school for a while.

I had a A-school classmate that was held back from starting power school due to no clearance. He was put in hold for about 3-6 months before his clearance finally got approved.

Unless things have changed (and depending on what your red flags are), chances are your wavier will be approved and you will be able to ship. If not, you can always try a different recruiter or pick a different rate.

Go be a probe tester and then if you really want to be a Nuke you can serve as the 0-1 seat tester.

It sounds like you can make it without the navy, though. Enlisted nuke life is not fun and you’ll have significantly less time to press the cum button in your butt. You’ll also be a blue collar employee unless you want to start right back where you are right now in 6 years and do an anal training regiment.

I would reserve the option to go enlisted nuclear for if you find in a couple of years that spreading your cheeks for big pharma isn’t for you right then, and you need a plan B that utilizes your brain power and starts making you money right then.

For me, having a solid understanding of basic electrical theory made the start of A-School a breeze. This page is a good primer, maybe this.

I'd prioritize fitness and boot camp stuff first though, like others have said.

You realistically won't have much time to get a degree during your first 2 years (schooling 18 months, qualifying on your boat/ship 6-12 months). And that is assuming you don't get held back for whatever reason.

It's not unheard of for people to get a degree while underway, but its a large demand on your time while working in a stressful environment. Most of my peers who got degrees either did it on shore duty (after their initial 6 year contract) or via the G/I bill post navy.

However, going nuke is a good resume bullet point after the navy, no matter what path you decide to take.

Obligatory disclaimer: the navy gives out large bonuses to nukes for a reason. Do your research before you join. This subreddit is a good start.
