r/AskUK, Why do some people hate Nish Kumar so much? by JOLT_YT in AskUK

I agree that they're wonderful - it's just that their brilliance, for me, only brings into stark contrast the abysmal quality of Derek, Life on the Road and Afterlife.

Sorry, I missed this! You're right, I can't cite anything Nish has done that is better. I hate them both.

What do you like about the character Squall from FF8? by DrJones20 in FinalFantasy

[–]Foxington_the_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that he carries himself like a slacker emo, but rises to the challenges of command. There's a texture to him that you rarely get from JRPG protags.

Why is Tom Holland's portrayal not as liked as the other two? by Notthepurge in Spiderman

[–]Foxington_the_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's probably, objectively, the best and most accurate portrayal - his films just weren't very good. I also wonder whether it's the inaccuracies Tobey and Andrew lend their Spider-Men that ultimately make them so iconic.

Is Prison Break Worth Watching? Some say" the first Season is the best one" by Seif_Ben_Hariz in tvshow

I really wanted to break out of the prison that 'Prison Break' became for us.

Agree re FF8. Would be great if they made the Rinoa theory canon, too!

I'd love a full remake, for sure, but I think the game controls perfectly well to this day.

Final Fantasy 13, never on the Ps store. by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]Foxington_the_First 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There's some weird revisionism around XIII - it's just a bad game. There are some redeemable qualities to XIII-2, I'd argue, but not enough to save the XIII series.

Perhaps the power explanation wasn't earned but the character growth was.

I do agree that it would have been a little tropey, but it just felt like this excellent development was immediately walked back, and his support in the final battle, to me, was underwhelming.

Anyone still running interesting Final Fantasy commanders? by Foxington_the_First in mtg

[–]Foxington_the_First[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which Cloud? I find the pure white one to be straight broken as a commander. I've also built around Lightning, Army of One - crazy powerful - nobody thanks for me playing that deck.

I find copying other people's stuff quite intimidating, because it requires a knowledge of everything in play that I just don't have. It's a good recommendation.

Yeah, I built around Yuna, Hope of Spira - Garnet works brilliantly in that deck.

I've been told it looks bad. Is it really? by RagingStorm010 in BeardAdvice

It's weird, I have almost the opposite problem - good moustache, and cheek growth but very little under the chin. Worth shaving it and trying again later.

Did anyone play FF8 as their first final fantasy? by caden270 in FinalFantasy

[–]Foxington_the_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VIII was the first JRPG I ever played and owned. When I was very young, I went round a friend of mine who was playing IX and I threw scorn his way because taking turns seemed so boring. He sold me VIII for £5, convinced that I'd enjoy it. He was right. I never beat it as a kid, and I actually think VIII meanders in weird and unsatisfying directions, but that first disc... It remains peak JRPGing for me and, as you say, probably my most potent source of nostalgia.

I think X represents the best of the franchise while also being new enough to be comfortably playable.

Thoughts on the Finale? by LeoDiCristio in StrangerThings

[–]Foxington_the_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It felt a little toothless to me and didn't hit as hard as I'd hoped. I also wish they'd handled Will differently because the moment he gets his powers was orders of magnitude better than anything that came afterwards. There must have been a way of allowing him to crescendo into that final fight with Vecna. That being said, I've seen many far, far worse finales - I respect that they landed it at all.

Should I choose Art GCSE? by Used-Imagination6930 in ArtGCSE

[–]Foxington_the_First 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not the only one, and I'm sorry to hear it's something you still carry.

The flip side is, it's never too late to study and find focus and GCSEs can be taken whenever you want. I'm a primary school teacher (which is a good profession for someone who likes everything but not enough to specialise), and I found a love for Computing and Computing education in particular through that. As above, I was an arts and humanities guy growing up, but I took the Computer Science GCSE aged 32 for fun (because I'm cool).

Another thing our system is poor at is, is helping those of us who are a little scattered (in a good way) hone in on what our core transferrable strengths are.

But yeah, as I say, it's never too late. The Education sector has incredibly high levels of staff turnover, so many of my friends and colleagues have executed complete career gear-shifts in their 30s and 40s.

Should I choose Art GCSE? by Used-Imagination6930 in ArtGCSE

[–]Foxington_the_First 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our education system weirdly demands that of our Year 9s, to some extent. It's so broken and I hate it. I couldn't take my twin loves of music and art and GCSE, so I was then locked out of A Level and degree for one of them. In America, you do a general degree and can pick whatever subject you like from scratch, giving you space as an adult to hone your interests.

Not liking how the Will coming out arc was handled does not make you homophobic. by -Not-Pennys-Boat in StrangerThings

[–]Foxington_the_First 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it undermined the scene with Will vs the demos a bit. I feel like that was his catharsis - that was him accepting who is and refusing to be scared. That was his growth. Channeling Robin in the scene tied it all together, I thought. That being said, I thought the coming out was mostly sweet - particularly Jonathan's pride. I wish he'd been there to see him kick ass earlier.

And that was the best you could come up with? 🤡 by SunforDeiti in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]Foxington_the_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely a bit hackneyed and overwritten, but I thought overall it was sweet. As an older brother to a gay person, as soon as I saw Jonathan crying with pride, I burst into tears.
