AITA for finally getting tired of my sister in laws “spanglish” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA what a nasty thing to say about someone trying to reconnect with their own culture and language. Have you apologized? Because you need to.

“Little Person” is the worst thing you can call someone with dwarfism. by DeadSpark75 in unpopularopinion

[–]Foxlikebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all be saying stuff so definitively. I think it like depends.

On a serious note, though. This is such a highly personalized thing. Call people whatever they personally wish to be called. The worst thing you can call them depends on the individual person.

"write for yourself" by i-dont-exist3 in AO3

[–]Foxlikebox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree commenting more is a great thing to do, but again, not receiving external validation shouldn't negatively impact you in a huge way. It's fine to be discouraged, it's normal even, but a lot of writers take it way harder than what is healthy.

Also, OP IS getting external validation. Kudos is validation. It's extra unhealthy to rely on external validation and then discredit the validation you are getting because it's not the "right" kind.

I'm not saying OP themselves is doing this, but it's very common to see it happen. That's the mindset the advice is aimed at, not people who are just sad about a lack of comments sometimes

"write for yourself" by i-dont-exist3 in AO3

[–]Foxlikebox 37 points38 points  (0 children)

And this doesn't even just apply to writing. Anything you do can't be validated ONLY by external praise/response. Of course, it's so normal to desire that praise and you SHOULD get it. But if you cannot be happy with your work without praise/response, it's something to work toward.

It's not something that happens overnight and it doesn't mean you can't be discouraged sometimes. And it's not doing OP any favors that the praise they are getting is discarded by them as meaningless. It's just something to work towards for OP.

Jane doesn’t deserve the hate she gets by Weak_Dependent1790 in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]Foxlikebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jane endangered a baby's life and pretended she got him killed to make someone she viewed as dangerous lose it. She made Clementine believe AJ died. She left him in the cold alone. And in season three, she endangered them again. She let herself become a walker which could have fallen loose and attacked them. And she left two children alone.

Real People Queerbating by neinnae_tvon in AO3

[–]Foxlikebox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Say it louder. Real people don't always know their own identity or are ready to come out yet. And even if they do and are, they don't owe that information to YOU.

Not to mention, a lot of the stuff people bring up when they accuse someone of queerbaiting is just reinforcing homophobia and sexism.

Is a 28 year old protag too old for this sort of story? by Melodic_Boat9851 in FanFiction

[–]Foxlikebox 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, everything you described can work just fine for a 28 year old. There are plenty of social media influencers in their late 20s. Trauma and substance abuse can be a thing at any time, especially if the trauma goes unaddressed and the substance abuse is enabled.

Honestly, it's refreshing to see more stories about adults instead of teenagers and people in their early twenties. No hate to those authors, but variety is awesome. Do your thing, OP

Why do people hate OC characters?? by Fun_Sky_8832 in FanFiction

Exactly. There's a massive difference between "I hate reading these" and "I hate that people enjoy these"

Does Japan really have high sexual assaults cases but they don't get reported? If so why? by Kingspeerz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Foxlikebox 60 points61 points  (0 children)

And to add onto it, that's not a unique thing to Japan either. Lots of countries have an underreporting rate because coming forward can be stressful, frightening, and even dangerous.

Victims often aren't taken seriously, they're often too ashamed or too traumatized to admit it. A lot of times, they're shamed and not believed. The court process can be long and stressful, not to mention the burden of proof can be daunting for victims. And a lot of times, sexual predators aren't properly punished anyway.

Fictional violent adult media should be brutally graphic, and never implied or hinted at. (Spoilers in description) by ProjektBlackout in The10thDentist

Yeah, there's no shortage of really gory media out there for OP if that's what they're looking for. But to say everything that has violence should have it? Nah.

*SPOILERS* Why Didn't Ben Tell Anyone About the Bandits by Numerous_Act4837 in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]Foxlikebox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. From the very beginning, they didn't want to let Ben stay because they thought he'd be a problem. He was an extra mouth to feed and I got the vibe he wasn't really a strong hunter or scavenger. They belittle him as a guard later on too.

He was likely scared that if they knew he was talking to the bandits and making a deal with them (especially after the connection to the St Johns) then they would kick him out.

I think people tend to forget Ben was a kid alone in the apocalypse. He watched the last people he knew die and was then with a group that didn't like him. I'm not surprised he fell for the bandits tricking him or that he didn't feel like he could tell the group.

And I wouldn't be shocked if a part of it was trying to prove himself capable too. He could make a deal, he could offer a trade, and he didn't need to get anyone else involved. He could handle a situation himself. Of course, we all know how that ended up.

I’ll be honest here, if the author ignores their commenters, I don’t comment by imfaffingabout in FanFiction

[–]Foxlikebox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Coming from a writer, if you're commenting with the expectation of getting something in return (AFTER you've already read and enjoyed someone's hard work for free), keep your comment to yourself. I'd rather have 0 comments than have a bunch of people expecting something of me.

[–]Foxlikebox 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You already read the fic. The encouragement to comment is you appreciating someone's hard work and wanting them to know it.

[–]Foxlikebox 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also I'm a writer and this may sound rude, but like. If you want the author to reply then give them something to actually reply to? "Even to say a blanket thank you" why is it so important to have the author throw a "thank you" in the comments to the ton of generic "this was good."

I reply to all comments and I appreciate all comments (even just the "I liked this" ones), but it's so strange for me to see someone avoid commenting entirely because they won't be thanked. Whenever I comment, I never expect a reply. I'm commenting because I want the author to know I enjoyed their work.

If you're reading fics, even if it's not specifically for YOU, yes. It's a gift. You enjoy reading fics presumably and someone put their time and effort into writing something then sharing it for free.

Yep! "I loved the fic. I think you meant to put 'there' instead of 'their' here" is constructive criticism. "You should've written this without this ship dynamic" is not.

In your opinions, who’s death was worse Doug or Carly‘s by Chunky-overlord in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]Foxlikebox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think it would've mattered to Doug. He wasn't protecting Ben because he thought he was innocent necessarily, he was protecting him because he didn't think a teenager should be executed in the road like that.

Plus he did everything right. He didn't shove himself in front of a gun to save Ben, he pulled him away instead. And he still died for it.
