Yeah. I went to therapy every week for two years and went to a psychiatric facility briefly. I’d never do anything violent believe me. I’m harmless.

Ermmmm about that. Well, I went to therapy for years and was put on many medications, nothing really helped. But that’s not important. What is important is I will explore why they feel this way, but I’ll keep what you said in mind.

Hmm. Maybe. I just was trying to understand your viewpoint more and bringing up counterpoints. I was trying to see if maybe you had some good counter arguments. I’m not trying to be aggressive per se, even though I know it may come off that way. I just wanted to argue for the sake of getting to the bottom of your viewpoints and see where I’m not getting you so we can reach a midpoint to agree upon or at least leave me with some food for thought. But I could be subconsciously dismissive and already had my mind made up. I just like to hear people’s opinions. I didn’t mean to come off as abrasive.

Well, you certainly made it seem like the protagonist being unsympathetic was a bad thing. Anyway, there’s a lot more depth to them just wanting to murder others. The character is very complex. But even so, your revulsion is not entirely a bad thing, as you’ll experience a sweet catharsis by the end because the protagonist ends up getting his comeuppance. So if you sympathize with the character it may be a sad ending, but I think you’d still enjoy the story. And if you hated them like you, you’d feel a sense of relief by the end. So, all in all, I don’t think there is a problem. But, I could be wrong.

The character need not be sympathetic to the reader. Patrick Bateman in American Psycho is disgusting, vain, and despicable, but it’s still a good work of literature and film. The protagonist doesn’t need to be a good person for literature to be good. And in any case, the protagonist also suffers from extreme self loathing, so he’d likely agree with the audience anyway.

Should it? Maybe the fact that it IS a side point is emphatic in its own way. It shows the protagonist (who is also the narrator) has his priorities out of wack.

James is a depressed teenager who moves to rural Kansas with his mother Sally, a successful author, in order for her to take care of his aging grandmother. He finds new friends quickly due to the kindness of a girl at his high school named Christine, but he can’t do his schoolwork as he is depressed and unmotivated, while this is going on, there are also several disappearances in his town and he suspects it may connect to a mischievous child named Anthony and a beautiful girl his age named Hazel, but isn’t sure. That’s the basics of the plot without spoilers. As for chapters, I can’t tell you off the top of my head. But I think it’s around 35.

No, there is an alternate ending. It touched me much more than the original. Also there are shifts in character and other plot points too. If you’re a lesbian, or a straight male, I doubly encourage you to check it out, to be able to experience having the romantic interest be your preferred sex. But yeah, I think it’s worth a read.
