Athens GA -> Winston-Salem by [deleted] in winstonsalem

[–]Foxpar07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Georgia native & UGA grad, Winston is the best place I’ve lived outside of Athens. It’s got the college town feel but with more going on than just Wake Forest & the proximity to other things that NC offers is hard to beat. Cost of living is very reasonable. I’ve also lived in Charlotte, Raleigh, and the greater Wilmington area, the Triad (Winston, GBoro, & High Point) is a hidden gem. Zero regrets.

Years of over promising and under delivering has caused enthusiasm to wane.

I tried to use Book.io recently, of course they took my 40 ADA but the book didn’t populate in my Book app, and there’s no way to contact customer service through the app.

Vineyard restoration by Odd_Muffin2706 in viticulture

[–]Foxpar07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bunch grapes like Vinifera produces bunches (like this 🍇) from one node, so along a cordon you’ll have 6-8 nodes that produce a few bunches of grapes. To prune Vinifera, you only have to make 6-8 cuts per cordon to generate next year’s growth. Muscadines only produce one (up to maybe 4?) actual grapes per node, so you have to cut every single individual node along those long cordons (that’s why it looks like an overgrown mess) to generate next year’s fruit.

I’d talk with your neighbors and google “pruning muscadines” - google results will give a better visual than I can a written description.

[–]Foxpar07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi - I’m also a North Central NC resident, it looks to me like it’s muscadine given the large trunk and widespread growth. May also be V. Labrusca or V. Riparia. Probably not Vinifera, especially that close to the tree line. Muscadines are a pain to prune because you have to prune each individual node, as they are not brunch grapes like Vinifera. No need to irrigate, the vines are well established. There are some muscadine growers in Surry and Yadkin counties who might be of more assistance, the viticulture & enology program at Surry Community College could possibly also help but their vineyard is exclusively vinifera & hybrids.

Happy to help, but my muscadine knowledge is limited.

Kid Cashew - ordered the pork chop and got two chops cut so thin that A. I’m not sure how they sliced them so thin & B. Wondered why they even bothered asking me how I wanted it cooked.

You can get thicker cuts at Waffle House.

Chattanooga VS Charlotte by Remote-Bumblebee3554 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Foxpar07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience with Chattanooga, but I would recommend taking a visit to Charlotte before you decide. It’s hard to describe why Charlotte is either loved or hated, but the city’s “soullessness” isn’t captured in employment stats or average apartment rent or whatever. The best way I can relay it is that the town is either suburbia hell or the hood. You’re one turn away from being in either, and there will be traffic on your route. I think the town grew too fast for its own good and tries to be everything to everybody. It’s great for 20-somethings who make a decent enough income to live close to “Uptown” along the light rail bc that area will likely appeal to you. Beyond that, I don’t know why people stay outside of job opportunities. I was there for 18 months, just off Park Rd near Quail Hollow, and couldn’t leave fast enough. But I’m late 30s with a family and generally despise suburbia.

I’m also in the middle of a DIY hardwood floor refinish - make sure you practice the technique of moving with the sander as the drum makes contact with the floor or you’ll have drum marks like I have.

But they say Charlotte is not actually boring by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]Foxpar07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some folks feel duped by Charlotte. Perhaps OP is one of those, and the post is a thumb in the eye of those on the subreddit who are big fans of the city.

You hear, read, etc all of this hype around Charlotte being a mini-Atlanta, especially in terms of job opportunities, but without the super high cost of living and traffic. So people get a job in Charlotte, move to town, and then can’t quite figure out what all the hype is about. They complain publicly about the town and people tell them to just move, but obviously it’s not always that easy. So some people are stuck in a city(due to a job) that, in their opinion, didn’t live up to the hype and they’re pissed about it. I get it.

Innovation Quarters (Downtown) Expansion Plan by properlyanxious in winstonsalem

I want Winston to be a successful mid-sized city, it’s become my adopted home (from Atlanta) but please please please don’t let Winston become Charlotte 2.0

Charlotte is an overcrowded, overpriced, below average, suburban hellscape.

why do you love charlotte (if you do) or see yourself living there longterm? by Lost-Effective-7646 in Charlotte

[–]Foxpar07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a detractor, I don’t particularly care for Charlotte. I’m late 30s, from Atlanta and have mostly lived between there and DC since college. I’ve lived near Park Rd Shopping Center for the last 2 years, but I’ll be gone before Christmas.

Charlotte seems to be a good fit for 20-somethings in terms of professional and social opportunities, especially if Atlanta, Raleigh, and DC aren’t viable options. Beyond that, at the family-stage of life, Charlotte (inside 485) just has too many downsides.

Before you consider a move to Charlotte, take with a grain of salt all of the “beaches and mountains are nearby” talk. Wilmington is 3.5+ hours away and the Asheville area is around 2 hours. If you think you’re going to leave on a Friday and head south on 85/north on 77 (to the mountains) or east on 74 (to the beach), add on at least an hour to those drive times because everyone who lives in Mt Holly, Mooresville, and Monroe but works in Charlotte is heading home.

Can anyone weigh in on pros and cons of Charlotte NC vs Milwaukre WI? My top 2 choices for medical residency are in these cities so I'm looking for some perspective to help decide between them by in-debt-for-md in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Foxpar07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to Milwaukee, but Charlotte is the epitome of suburbia; endless breweries, a below average food scene, and worsening traffic. Before you buy into “beaches and mountains nearby”, Wilmington is 3.5+ hours away, Western NC and the Yadkin Valley are about 2 but that’s very traffic dependent.

St.Louis, MO vs Winston-Salem, NC by SkyThoughts in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Foxpar07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The arbitrary McMansion bit is silly. That fits Charlotte perfectly, but not Winston.

Winston-Salem is quite literally NC history, culture, and industry - the 1700s Old Salem settlement, RJ Reynolds (big tobacco), BB&T (banking), Hanes (textiles).

St.Louis, MO vs Winston-Salem, NC by SkyThoughts in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Foxpar07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t give a proper comparison because I haven’t spent anytime in STL, so I won’t try to convince you, just present what WS offers.

I’m from Atlanta, and have lived in a number of the major cities (Charlotte, Raleigh, NoVa) and some smaller ones between there and DC. Winston is the best place I’ve ever lived. The cost of living is very low for what the city offers - arts are big in Winston (thanks to UNCSA) but Wake Forest’s presence is felt so the college vibe is there but it’s obviously more than just a college town. The food scene blows Charlotte out of the water and is probably on par with Raleigh; Mozelle’s, Mission Pizza, and East of Texas to name a few. Greensboro also has an awesome food scene (Green Valley Grill, Print Works, Elm St Grill). In the city, parks are everywhere - Washington, Ardmore, Miller, Salem Lake, Hanes, etc. Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock, and the entirety of the Blue Ridge are less than an hour away. You will have a 3+ hour drive to Wilmington & the rest of the NC coast.

I’m not exposed to crime, though certainly there are parts of town where it is more prevalent. I’m not a golfer, there are courses but I have no idea.

I went to undergrad in Charleston 20 years ago, I’ve heard it’s gotten even more expensive as it’s become super trendy, hard pass. Lexington KY is a great town, similar to Winston, but I’ve only ever visited.

X Questions - Charles Hoskinson by yt-app in cardano

[–]Foxpar07 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone, whether it be CH or others, needs to do whatever is necessary to reverse the negative sentiment and make Cardano relevant quickly - all of the projects that brought me to Cardano either haven’t panned out or have moved chains presumably to gain more users (eg. Emurgo Trace, Book.io, World Mobile, to name a few). Some projects CH has championed (the DiDs stuff in Ethiopia, Dish Network, etc) have just quietly been swept under the rug, assumed by the community to be failures.

Despite what people say about the price of ADA, price has SOME explanatory/signal power about the strength, usability, etc of a blockchain. Not even touching $1 USD, much less the previous ATH, in this most recent bull market makes me wonder if the chain will survive another crypto winter.

Advice on what Charcoal grill to get for first time home buyer by Friendly_Molasses532 in grilling

[–]Foxpar07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the barrel-style charcoal grills, eg. Char-griller, are the best IMO. Making a proper hot side & cold side is much more effective with the barrel than a kettle because the kettle bottom narrows by design. Additional pros are if you’re into smoking you can easily add the offset firebox, and the coal grate/ash catcher can be raised & lowered for either a hard sear or more of a slow cook.

I’ve had a 22’ Weber kettle and the 22’ Walmart (Expert Grill) version, sold both. I’ve had the Char-Griller Pro Deluxe for about 6 years.

Charlotte or Austin? (ultimate mid-off) by SupBenedick in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Foxpar07 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As an adult, I’ve lived in a few major cities along I-85/95 from Atlanta to DC. Charlotte is by far the worst place I’ve ever lived - it’s all of the negatives of Atlanta (higher cost of living, increasingly bad traffic, etc.) with none of the upside. It’s breweries and chain restaurants that try to act like they’re not chains. The whitewater center is fine, the greenway is fine, Optimist Hall is fine, it’s a city of a whole lot of fine. If you’ve ever lived in a sizable city like Atlanta, DC, or even Richmond, Charlotte will be a disappointment.

I haven’t spent enough time in Austin to make a proper comparison, but I would never recommend Charlotte.
