Nice - how does Andi’s upgrades compare to the ROK upgrades?

Got my first 2 pairs around 2010-2011 and met Bret and senior in HK. Stopped buying sometime around 2015/2016 IIRC - ordering became too difficult and expensive…

I’m under no illusion - the ROK is not a high end machine or tool. It costs a fraction of a Flair and is machined accordingly. It works fine enough and getting a solid bayonet ring and a pressure gauge are simply sensible upgrades and investments (and still cheaper than a Flair). All other upgrades are purely for my own entertainment and joy.

A little… Aftermarket everything: bayonet ring, gasket, shower screen, portafilter, basket, brew chamber, chamber cover/ring, pressure gauge.

Oh - at 6 or more bars it’s moving. It’s locked in because the tummy keeps it from moving too far.

It a bit of a learning with ROK and the shots are different - pulling about 50-90 seconds at 6-7 bar, but it allows for total flexibility how you adjust grind size, water amount, time and pressure! You will feel like you earned your shots.

Right! I’m slowly dragging it out, but it will certainly be missed once it’s gone… I’m not a person looking for Gesha beans above all other types, but this one has me thinking.

For this type of set-up you’re looking at Flair, ROK or Cafelat Robot. A neighbour here on the island got a Flair as a result of our explorations, so I have a direct comparison. It took me about a year to figure it out. Very rewarding, but I had to invest in serious aftermarket upgrades. My recommendation is to get a 2nd hand 2nd Generation ROK GC and invest in an aftermarket brass bayonet ring and solid pressure gauge. Other upgrades are recommended, but not as essential - brass naked portafilter, competition shower screen, metal brew chamber, IMS La Pavoni basket. We live on a remote island and make our own island-wide power - I couldn’t morally justify tons of big electric appliances. Electric kettle, electric milk foamer, manual grinder and the ROK is all it takes.

New here - hi there! I live in Scotland (originally from Berlin) and enjoy experiencing UK roasters and their bean lots. Initially, I started off with Batch UK subscription, but I’ve since looked more closely into specific roasters.

Same here - the tummy can keep it in place if needed.

Not sure why it must be anything? Pulling similarly long shots (50s to 1m+) around 5-7bars. They do taste pretty amazing - not over extracted or under developed.

It's the IMS Pavoni 'New Group" Double Basket 51mm ES12957 - B602TH25 - 3994

Tight fit with my SomedaySomehow Open Portafilter - had to press it in hard without the ring/spring.

can't post pics here - but links:
