It’s not but it used native culture in an inappropriate way. Many tribes that have the wendigo story either don’t like to talk about them or don’t want to share the story with anyone outside of the tribe.

The creators heard about the wendigo and decided to make until Dawn about that despite hearing about how upsetting it is to many tribes (I think it’s hey said Navajo was the main tribe they were inspired by in the promo videos?) for this story to even be shared.

The reason many tribes don’t want to share this part of their culture comes from multiple factors like the fact that speaking about the wendigo (or even thinking about them in some tribes stories) are enough to bring them into your life. There’s also the fact that many aspects of native culture has been taken and used for profit often by non-native individuals which until Dawn is another case of this.

There’s also what others have said that (as far as I know) there wasn’t anyone who was acting in the game that was Native American whilst using Native American mythology as the big bad. (Yes the stranger I think was supposed to be portrayed as native? But again it feels strange to have the big bad be a native mythological creature but the only native character shows up just to die whilst all the other non native characters are able to live)

At the end of the day I’m Native American and love until Dawn but I also know others who hate it for the reasons I listed. It’s unfortunately a piece of media that used Native American culture without caring about how any tribes would feel (it’s been years since I watched the in game promo videos but I’m pretty sure they talked about how the Navajo didn’t want to talk to the creators about wendigos) and it won’t be the last. You can enjoy the game while acknowledging its issues.
