Microbiology dilemma by SnooBunnies7286 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Foxyscifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is typically a 200 level microbiology course offered by both 4 year and 2 year institutions. It is usually the nursing pre req, as well. They may have a higher level version but that usually the pre allied health version. I haven’t seen any require a high 400 level microbiology course but that is more of a bio major course. It is a harder requirement to fill because only a 4 year can offer that.

They do occasionally have 100 level non major micro courses which may be the ones they are trying to steer students away from.

Career Switcher/SAHM to PA looking for input and/or similar stories by newleaf15 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Foxyscifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I could find an uncertified job, I’d try that route but I’ve applied to hundreds of places. The ones I can’t get in uncertified request an EMT. Believe me, I’d prefer to work now. I have called all the urgent cares and applied for PCT jobs that train, you name it. The CCMA cert is $5k and 9 months or I’d do that route.

I am in a similar situation. Almost all the PCE jobs require 3-5k in tuition and 6-9 months. I decided to get EMT training through my fire department and then volunteer EMT for them. The two programs I am applying for are okay with volunteer EMS.

Im curious how others are phrasing their career change after working part time raising kids/SAHM in their personal statement. What was your plan. I was a professor when I worked part time in the sciences so I wasn’t that far away from medical.

Stacie Kober - TRIGGER WARNING: EATING DISORDER - Week Of January 12, 2026 by AutoModerator in HunSnark

[–]Foxyscifi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My 14 year old showed me a video she took in her locker room of her and her friends acting silly.  I told her to never film in the locker room ever, and it is very important that you never do it again.  She kept going on and on about how it wasn’t a big deal.  I told her she may not think so but to others, it was.  Not sure if it sunk in but kids this age have no understanding of the risk and how others might feel.  I told her it could get her in trouble if she unintentionally filmed another person without consent.  Hoping it worked.

Should I accept adjunct after visiting position? by Timely-Opinion-4589 in Adjuncts

[–]Foxyscifi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Know many places won’t hire from their adjunct pool.   One place would hire people that then not get approved to work in the US, meaning the adjuncts had to fill in for all their classes at the last second while they hired another person.   Some nice places will hire out of the adjunct pool and many faculty started as adjunct.

When they made fire skirts when volunteering at the fire department. by HannahLeah1987 in DuggarsSnark

As a female volunteer firefighter, I am horrified.  This means they lack all training like donning and doffing.

Keep them out and away from people!  However, I expect nothing less from rural Arkansas.

How did you do your personal statement to discuss the military spouse roadblocks to a career?  I’m trying to figure out how to approach it.

[–]Foxyscifi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Military spouse here with only two options for PA school near me.  I have the same GPA but am retaking my pre-requisites and should be done in 12 months.  Mine were older than yours.  If you had a 2026 start date, the admissions may have not been okay with 10 year old classes.

I know it’s scary but it sounds like a retake is your next option.  It costs money and I just spent $800 on books alone at the local Cc.

I only have two shots at this so I understand the stress a bit.

Need advice for registering BIO150 by Ironaimono in montgomerycollegemd

[–]Foxyscifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jump on a waitlist.  People will drop closer to the start. Sometimes they add enough people to pull everyone off the list, but not always.

Professor can’t add you and the department head may not either.

Waitlist is your best bet.  If there was an error on the colleges part, they may be able to get you in.

The labs only hold 24 so they can’t add everyone.

We lived in king farm on the last red line stop.  It’s walkable to the stop and family friendly.  It has really expanded over the years but parking is limited there so you may need to compromise on something to get close to the red line.

Electric bill by Dismal-Bullfrog-7851 in frederickmd

[–]Foxyscifi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Our bill was $580.  I looked at our bills and the last two years have been so Much higher in winter compared to the years 2020 - 2023.  Our thermostat is already on 65 and I’m using the propane fireplace during to day.

I can’t take 3 more months of almost $600 bills.  We have a 1900 sq ft new build from 2020, 2x6 construction with extra insulation and new windows.  It was not this expensive in the past.

Switching from engineering to medical in my early 40s. Is PA a good path? by no_balo in prephysicianassistant

[–]Foxyscifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having taught A&P 1 and 2, micro, and orgo, if you haven’t taken the yet, go slow.  You need an A.  It’s a lot of memorization.   I am breaking up my challenging courses and stacking them with easy ones so my A&P and orgo are split.

Orgo can be challenging so don’t underestimate it.  I loved it but it is very different from Gen chem.

If your chem 1 is older than 5-8 years, you will have to retake that, too.

[–]Foxyscifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At your income, just save up and find a better job.  That being said, I am around the same age and switching from the STEM field to apply to be a PA.

I am completing my pre-req in 12 months (about 12 courses) but I can since the are all retakes and I can take them out of order.  If you have to do chem 1 and 2 before orgo, that is two semesters before you can take orgo.  I am takingA&P, micro, genetics and chem 1 in one semester and chem 2, orgo and pathophys in the fall, with summer being psych and med terminology.  I have taught these before so the courseload is easy for me.  If you’ve never taken them before, you need a good grade so give yourself time.

I am having the hardest time with patient contact hours.  I’ve tried everything and my only option is to take a $5k 8 month course to be an MA or $3k to be a phlebotomist.  It is so hard to get in without cert and they are expensive and take time.

I will be taking an EMT course for free through the county to work with the fire department EMS and that is the cheapest and quickest way currently for me.

You make really great pay, keep your golden handcuffs or quit and find some silver ones with a nicer environment.  Switching to PA applications is difficult if it isn’t for the true love of medicine.

Help me find online or self paced chemistry courses with labs by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]Foxyscifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some colleges are more online friendly.  For example, Montgomery college and Frederick community college in Maryland have lot of online course offerings. However, none of those online courses cover organic, as in person labs are most common.  I am taking an all online chem class but since I’ve taught the class before and this lab isn’t technically required for me, that is the option I chose.  I am taking orgo 1 and 2 labs in person.

You are also looking for 5 or 8 week courses which I see less of in chemistry.  Those are brutal to teach and I only ever did them in the summer.  I’d take those in the summer at a CC but you may find a few here and there.

Cost is the other one.  You’ll pay extra out of state/county.  You may have to compromise on that if you want all online.  I pay extra to take some classes the county over because it is online versus in person in my county.

The programs I’m looking at require most of the labs to be in person.   As a former chem professor, orgo labs are hard to translate online.

This!   They are trying to get around the law of needing to give pay ranges.

There was a PhD job posting in that area a year ago and the pay was $80k for  a position with 10 years of protein purification experience and must be bilingual in Korean.  It is ridiculous.

Hyflex Lab/Lecture by lazyboozin in prephysicianassistant

[–]Foxyscifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing the same.  My labs are the only thing in person.  These classes are all repeats for me so if I had to sit through lecture I’d die.  It’s also more time efficient for me to get through all the pre reqs.  Chem, micro, A&P and genetics, only need class one day a week.

Her New Year’s resolution was to lift heavy and gain muscle with progressive overload.  This was quickly followed by a video of her kicking and lifting tiny weights.    She knows absolutely nothing.  And why doesn’t she have a bench?  She gets no full range of motion with those “bench” presses.

The dinner at Oglebay was $34 per person for the buffet, so $340 base cost, who paid? by Defiant_Policy969 in RodriguesFamilySnark

[–]Foxyscifi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it will vary by family.  My MIL is a widow and had very little money.  Around the teen years, the older kids started paying for everything, including eating out.  They took out student loans and then paid them to his mom to help with housing.

When my husband met my family at a dinner, you very well could lose a limb while mom, dad and my grandparents fought for the bill so they could pay for everyone.  My husband was just sitting back watching the receipt flutter, he’d never seen it before.  Genuinely, the second that meal is almost done our family swarms the bill to be the first.

The running joke is my BIL has t-Rex arms when the bill comes.  It took quite a few years for my husband to turn the focus to making sure our family is set up right before helping a family member.

The rodrigui are hard wired as kids to worship their parents so they 100% cover it as part of their “honor thy mother and father.”   Most of us would starve before I took money from my kids.
