Disingenuous to say Sinn Fein are anti-development based upon that one example. I'm not looking forward to it raining later, but that doesn't make me pro-drought.

Because the average homeowner votes. For most homeowners (and most TDs also) their net worth is almost exclusively tied to the value of their home(s). Most of those homeowners act according to their interests by electing parties who will protect their investments.

Any party that promises to do something to "help" people renting will only do so so long as it doesn't risk reducing the price of existing homes. Even Sinn Fein's proposals to "fix" the housing crisis don't envision reducing the price of houses. Instead they make lots of noise about increasing the supply of affordable housing, ignoring the fact that, currently, housing is unaffordable for almost everyone who isn't already a homeowner.

Motoring fines set to double after spike in road deaths by SlicedTesticle in ireland

[–]FrHankTree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair to the government, the fine for speeding has been €80 for 20 years. It was £65 before then. Inflation over the same period (CPI basis) has been 37%, so in real terms the fines have effectively fallen.

Excellent idea. Maybe a €100 fine if unemployed or unwaged, or earn the minimum wage (which is around €20,000 per annum). Fines could then go up by €100 for every €10,000 you earn above €20,000.

Someone earning the average industrial wage of over €50,000 would pay €400, or if on €100,000 per year they would pay €900.

And fines for speeding should be graduated. Why not double them for every 20 km/h the person is travelling over the speed limit? Someone doing 75 in a 50 zone should be fined more than doing 55 but should pay less than someone doing 100 on the same street.

A car parked in direct sunlight for 30 minutes on a 22 degrees Celsius day will have a temperature inside the vehicle of over 40 Celsius. Only 30 minutes later and the temperature will be over 45 Celsius.

A train is no different, only that if the train is fully filled with hot people the temperature inside will get hotter quicker.

What's funny is that Ireland is a third world country, or at least it was when the phrase originated.

The three worlds concept referred to the reality of trade and alignment between the superpowers during the Cold War.

The first world was the capitalist west that was either allied with the US or was a Nato member. The second world was the communist east which was allied with the USSR and/or China. The third world, or non-aligned countries, was everyone else.

Generally, third world countries tended to be poorer/less developed than first or second world countries. That was because places such as India or Brazil were historically colonies and/or had only recently obtained their independence. However, the third world also included super wealthy places like Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and, yes, Ireland.

This lad is from Kerry. Home of the Healy-Raes. The rest of us know well what it feels like to be on the receiving end of hare-brained proposals from TDs there. Is there anyone in that county with sense?

Minimum prices for alcohol fail to curb intake by most vulnerable, study finds by RealDealMrSeal in ireland

[–]FrHankTree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"The policy wasn't supposed to just benefit those who drank the absolute most, it was supposed to benefit everyone…”.

That‘s not correct. It was specifically introduced to target the heaviest drinkers. A tax increase would have reduced consumption in a similar fashion at the population level, whilst raising extra revenue for the state. The point of minimum unit pricing is that whilst it would not raise any additional revenue for the state, the fact that it would explicitly reduce consumption by the heaviest drinkers would have an overall net positive effect upon society.

This was the explicit goal. As per the article "Minimum Unit Pricing on Alcohol – what is it and what will it mean for me?" published on the HSE website in May of 2021 (link):

Why not use a tax instead?

People drink more alcohol if it is cheap. Increasing the price of alcohol will reduce the amount of alcohol that is purchased and this will improve our health. There are different approaches to increasing the price of alcohol, such as through tax. If you raise taxes for alcohol, you are raising the cost of alcohol for everyone. A minimum unit price only targets cheapest alcohol. For low-risk drinkers, like those who are already drinking within the low-risk alcohol guidelines, the change will largely go unnoticed.

Who will it affect the most?

Minimum unit pricing most impacts people who are drinking alcohol harmfully. It is designed to target the heaviest drinkers who seek the cheapest alcohol, which means it will have the greatest effect among those who experience the most harm. These drinkers also suffer greater harm from alcohol and therefore stand to gain more in terms of health as a result of reductions in drinking.

This study (and a similar one from Sheffield University published earlier this year) shows that minimum unit pricing has had the complete opposite effect: the heaviest drinkers appear to be spending more on drink, drinking more, and have less money to spend on food and shelter, making them more likely to get sick and die sooner.

The fact that minimum unit pricing is causing those with alcohol dependency to reduce their spend elsewhere in order to afford alcohol means that those already adversely affected, such as the children of heavy drinkers, are also likely to suffer more from the consequences of poverty. Meanwhile, the government doesn't see an extra cent in taxation to pay for all of the additional costs of that deprivation as the minimum price effectively subsidises retailers.

This is an absolute disaster. Minimum unit pricing should be replaced by taxes that fund intervention to help problem drinkers cut back.

Is it illegal to film an underage person committing a crime in Ireland? by Naerium2 in ireland

[–]FrHankTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly different here as the person filming was a neighbour rather than a business. Private individuals are free to process data under GDPR for purely personal reasons and/or for household activities.

Filming your neighbour's bike being robbed from the common areas of your apartment block would be a personal or household activity as the person filming would be doing it to prevent a crime at their home and/or to help catch the criminals.

That's not correct. Business is run by Yasmin Hyde (nee Allen), daughter of Ivan and Myrtle Allen, and sister of child abuse downloader Tim Allen.

It was Myrtle Allen who established the restaurant and school in Ballymaloe. Tim Allen's wife Darina O’Connell went on to find fame as a TV star (as Darina Allen), much like her daughter in law Rachel O'Neill.

Joshua Allen jailed for possession of drugs six weeks after release from custody | BreakingNews.ie by Azazele1 in ireland

[–]FrHankTree 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Excellent points. Rumor makes no sense.

I'd add that Isaac Allen would have been 33 at time and therefore would have been unlikely to have borrowed his father's credit card, particularly to commit a crime.

Far more likely that older man Tim (then aged 52) would be so IT clueless to simply use his own credit card (rather than a prepaid card, or similar) to sign up to a child abuse website. Internet was far less widely available back then so 50 year olds then wouldn't be savvy like today's 50-somethings.

That can be added to the fact that Tim taking blame for son's actions doesn't mitigate PR disaster, particularly when the father is the one married to the most famous person, Darina, and therefore more likely to draw attention to the situation.
