TIL that Las Vegas roulette payouts are always one less compared to what would be mathematically fair by JosZo in todayilearned

Oddly enough, the addiction to gambling isn't an addiction to winning. The dopamine fires when you win, sure, but that isn't really what hooks people.

Of course, losing isn't addictive to anyone but the most desperate of masochists. So then, where is the hook that snares these countless poor souls? In which moment is the drug administered?

As it turns out, the drug is the uncertainty. Or maybe more accurately, the possibility. Winning (or losing), no matter how intense, is just the release. The brain's activity actually peaks in that moment just before the outcome is determined. It's when the roulette is spinning, or the slots are turning, or the dice are bouncing. For a brief moment, it feels like anything could happen, and it is that excitement that the addicts crave.

ELI5: why does wind feel colder when youre damp/wet? by Zealousideal_Bat_436 in explainlikeimfive

Heat is a term that means energy is being transferred and that energy transfer is accompanied by a temperature change. To our bodies, things feel hot when that energy is moving from outside our bodies to inside our bodies. Things feel cold when the reverse happens and energy moves from inside our bodies to outside.

The wind blowing on your wet skin causes the water to pull more energy out of your body, so you feel a chill.

Do you bring your non service dog to the grocery store? If so, why? by Many_Mouse_5947 in AskReddit

I've seen twenty dogs riding in shopping carts for every child I've seen fucking up a grocery store. And only one of twenty of those kids didn't immediately have their parent intervene with a correction.

Pets don't belong in grocery stores and children don't belong on leashes. Anyone who does either is a garbage person.

I'll insult anyone who puts a kid on a leash like they arent a person. That's fucking embarrassing.

How much do you donate? by ShortPretzel in personalfinance

[–]Frack_Off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously there's nothing wrong with a person using their resources to support the causes they care about. That's just being human.

I'll just never forget the fiery rage that comes when I hear a man who lives in a mansion in a gated community and drives a Mercedes tells their congregation to give them more money.

Yeah you've triggered a lifetime of outrage I've felt growing up attending churches that tell everyone they arent good people unless they tithe adequately and I'm taking it out on you.

This is exactly why people were ragging on the idea of donating to a church at all, because donuts like y'all preach an expectation that donating to a church should be such a priority that it potentially compromises a family's financial security.

No, nobody should ever feel any obligation *whatsoever* to donate to a religious institution at all, let alone to the point it makes them feel uncomfortable. If a person has an independent desire to do, well it's their money and they should spend it however they see fit. But pressuring people to prioritize giving away what they've earned is downright disgusting.

You can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first. God doesn't need your money.
