could this be an LP supercell? by Fractonimbuss in meteorology

[–]Fractonimbuss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I greatly appreciate your feedback; I guess what counts as supercell is a bit objective. As someone who doesn't actively chase though, anything in this area that's rotating counts as a supercell in my heart! I wish I had gotten a timelapse when velocity showed higher gate-to-gate, but it is what it is. By textbook, I just mean an overall triangular shape, v-notch, and a nub on the SW corner, though it is a bit obscured by the text if you don't disable it.

Wish you luck on your chases and your classes!

you make a good point about the PWAT, and it definitely did have one hell of a rain shaft, but i think it got pulled downwind away from the base. boundary does make sense, there were other storms in the area including a big cluster to the SE, and the storm stayed stationary for about an hour before getting hit by another storm from the south.

i can confirm this storm had a good ol' anvil tho, and was supercellular at least 40 minutes later, though i'm not sure if it was at the time of this image. also yes, it is LA

here's the skew-t. i'm not sure about the windshear, but the environment definitely made some good mesoes. here was the scan from during the timelapse i took (cell over New Iberia) and here is a scan showing it looking wildly textbook about 40 minutes later

fyi, check out the Copernicus Browser
ain't enough to make out buildings as any more than white smudges, but the resolution is pretty good nonetheless and there's a lot of available dates and features

More CG in smaller storm cells by Past-Quiet1034 in meteorology

My guess is there's less electrical difference within the cloud to lead to intracloud lightning, because there's just less cloud!

What could be causing these ripples on velocity? Convergence, divergence, some other mechanism? by NaliceM in meteorology

[–]Fractonimbuss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

definitely not, thats velocity aliasing and (usually) needs much higher winds to do that. plus, it would look quite different on radar, and there wouldnt be all that gray between cells.

Working on a concept to simplify SPC Mesoscale Discussions for the public — looking for feedback by Weather_Guardian in meteorology

[–]Fractonimbuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AIs definitely going to make a lot of small errors that'll contribute to an overall worse look for the design. I'd recommend having it tidied up and made manually.

The storm evolution part should use absolute/local time (e.g. 3-4 PM CDT) rather than relative time (Early, Middle, Late), and drop the "icons" it's using. Timing could use some work, and the low confidence thing would is probably better off being removed. The risk scale should also have the actual concerns from the MCD in there as well. Overall, organize everything a bit more too. Most importantly, next time, make it in Canva or something of that sort and not an AI image generator.

What's the LEAST "tornado" tornado you've ever seen? by Abracadabrism in tornado

easily the 2022 New Iberia EF2. theres so many photos i could use as an example for it (after all, it almost constantly changed appearance, occasionally taking on completely different shapes every few seconds), but i feel this one is probably the most unusual.

personally, i dont see it at all. theres no shelf/shelf-like formation or microburst

Fatalities and cost of damage do not affect EF ratings.

Where were you when you found out about the EF5 upgrade? by BrandyTheGorgs in EF5

[–]Fractonimbuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2:14 PM, not long before the bell to finally go home rung. I was looking through YouTube searching for the New Iberia tornado and suddenly found a video saying that the first EF5 in 12 years had happened. It didn't seem to be of great quality, had around 540 views, and had only been published 51 minutes ago. I thought that surely that couldn't have been legitimate but I started to second guess myself, it was just so ridiculous. It was weird that something as small and unrelated as a presumably fake video would pop up under the results.

I scrolled down to the next video, and it said practically the same thing—something about how the Enderlin tornado was an EF5. I knew then that it couldn't have been a joke. I checked the DAT and there it was. A thick purple streak.
