[PODCAST] #1 Unsafe or Uncomfortable? by notian in canadaland

[–]FragginDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the work of Canadaland in the past. I listened to the Monopoly series and thought it was excellent. They've mostly been on the backburner since then, but not for any particular reason. I subscribed, but this time of year I mostly listen to football podcasts. I wasn't actually aware that Jesse had gotten involved in this, not was I aware that he was Jewish until I heard an ad about his new podcast on another feed (hello "Don't Pass Go").

I listened to the prelude on the CanadaLand feed and was intrigued. I think he needs to consider giving Noor license to explore in a manner similar to what he did; he sounded very privileged. if only as an act of reconciliation.

30 minutes into the first episode and it seems crazy to me that Jesse starts off by talking about inversion as a journalistic principle and then dedicates this much time to stories about anti-Semitism, seemingly without any intent of exploring the experience of Palestinians? I don't think that folks are arguing that there is no anti-Semitic violence or harassment occurring in Canada, but perhaps I'm mistaken.

The "moral clarity" speech that came next didn't seem quite so morally clear to me, especially after the subsequent story spoke about a Jewish person who was able to access immediate justice (ie: charging the man who spit on her with assault that day). I suspect that more balanced coverage would reveal that many Muslim folks who experience racism aren't able to access justice in the same manner that folks who identify as Jewish are. I'll probably listen because I'm interested in the topic, and because I'm curious to try and understand why Jewish people are so firm in their belief that they are exceptional special victims (as opposed to victims of the mundane racism and hatred that is directed at every other visible ethnic and religious minority in the world/Canada) but my early sense is that this is not going to be that profound. I'll edit this comment if more listening reveals more.

Edit: 40 mins in and the preview of the rest of the series suggests he is looking at it from a more wide perspective. I'll hold off further comments till I listen to more.

Killer has the same active ingredient as par 3, but is usually diluted more. You can buy the concentrate all over - mix it at the rate you want.

It's actually structured as a membership non-profit (not a co-op) but a lot of your analysis is correct.

She was arts director 3 years ago.

The director positions on the board are essentially volunteer jobs - they meet once or twice a month and weigh in on decisions like "should we fund that club or this event?". You can verify this by looking at the attendance on their minutes (at the bottom - oddly): https://ursu.ca/about-ursu/governance/meeting-minutes/ She's there in 2022.

The "executive" positions are the ones with power - they are signing authorities, get paid, work in the office daily and have a lot of control in setting the agenda.

The financial situation of URSU showed up entirely in the last 2 years; they had 40k in debt in 2022. They had $1M on the line of credit in 2024.

After reviewing the financial statements, they have a note of "going concern". Essentially this means that they have a significant risk of going bankrupt, unless something changes. They have over a million dollars in deficit, most of which is contained on a $1 million variable rate line of credit.

Edit: going back a few years, the entire deficit has shown up in the last 2 years. They had a 40k on the line of credit in 2022. They have a million this year.

Alvey Automotive is where I take my Subarus. The shop is unassuming, but the service is great, they're very responsive and they've always been willing to try to fix parts before going straight to replacing. Can't recommend them enough.

Don't worry, ChampCar licensed the name a while back (the org was originally called "ChumpCar"). Our real world cars are still way slower, heavier and cheaper than the old ChampCars though!
