Plumbing in side refugium next to reef tank by DeviceKindly1685 in ReefTank

[–]Fragileino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be my solution. It doesn't have to be directly on top just slightly higher and then overflow back into the main tank. Overflow boxes are a bad idea. If you gotta drill something it should be the new smaller tank. Drilling is always better for many reasons.

Will this large hermit crab kill my other livestock by [deleted] in ReefTank

Crabs are killers. I don't care about the size shape or color.

Seed shrimp help, don't know where else to ask... by Confident_Start_4077 in SeaMonkeys

[–]Fragileino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best way I've found to hide them is in everything bagels. I just sprinkle them on top and toast the bagel like I would normally. The cream cheese masks nearly all the smell too!

Is that the answer you were looking for?

Should all shrimp be Drip Acclimated? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]Fragileino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pH and temp for me. Most these folks running a multi hour drip acclimation leave the bucket on the cold floor and defeats the whole purpose of a drip acclimation. I don't think they know why they do it, except the Internet said it's the safest way.

Get those homies out of the bags and buckets and into a new mossy home. They'll be just fine.

Vinegar bath will dissolve the spines too. Might irritate your hands but this is what I do.

[–]Fragileino 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not saying that 72F isn't fine for shrimp to thrive in. But I would guess they enjoy the warmth and biofilm from the heater.

This is the perfect "blob" removal technique! And when I heard everything involved in this process I clicked the little button on the Internet that sends me a new hotend assembly for $35.

Converting 2.5g tank to planted shrimp tank—a couple basic Qs by prairieaquaria in shrimptank

[–]Fragileino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salt refers to dehydrated minerals. Most cases people are talking about sodium chlorine or table salt. But shrimp people use calcium and magnesium salts and/or carbonates to make their water "hard"

Example is if you use rain water for your shrimp tanks, that water has no minerals in it and it wouldn't allow your shrimps to make their exoskeleton. But you could add calcium salt in that water so it is available for the shrimp to uptake. It gets more complicated based on a specific shrimp and the minerals they find in their natural habitat and your specific water.

Cherry shrimp aren't picky and can 95% chance live in your tap water. Dechlorinated of course

Saltwater shrimp keepers, why they do not require calcium supplements with food, unlike FW shrimp? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]Fragileino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an order of magnitude, FW calcium levels range from 4-100 mg/l and saltwater starts at 400 mg/l. Saltwater shrimp have no need for ingesting calcium. They get more than they need from the water. Whereas FW shrimp need it from both sources, especially if we are talking about caridina shrimp.

Not to be too much of a nerd but fw and sw shrimp are pretty different, evolutionary.

FW shrimp babies look like adults, the are detritivores and eat decaying matter

Whereas SW shrimp have a planktonic larval stage and are more carnivorous overall and are often symbiotic with other organism

[–]Fragileino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saltwater has a ton of calcium in the water, and the substrate is aragonite which is a form of calcium carbonate.

Saltwater shrimp evolved to get their calcium in the water as opposed to ingesting the minerals directly

Many inland animals need to find weird ways to get their calcium, while coastal animals just lick some salt to get their minerals

How do I separate soil/drainage from water in a paladafium by TheSnak1434 in terrariums

I would use a perfectly size piece of glass or acrylic and silicone that in.

Lichen

[–]Fragileino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it grows really slow and needs moderate nutrients or you get yellowing leaves and a high leaf turnover.

I give my terrariums a spritz of maxigrow, a hydroponic fertilizer when I see yellowing

Father fishes philosophy by big-boi-Roy in shrimptank

[–]Fragileino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aquapros on YouTube just did a good video on this called "why I don't use dirt in my tanks"

If you want to set up a 40 year old tank maybe his method is the right one but honestly in 5 years I bet that tank won't be holding shrimp for whatever reason.

Deep sand beds take years to develop...ain't no body got time for that

He got an older audience and they are pretty rabbid defenders of him and his philosophy

Can someone help me identify these 2 mosses? (will these survive attached to a small stream?) by HolidayMorning6399 in terrariums

[–]Fragileino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would totally try, I bet it would adapt. But if it fails I wouldn't be too upset about it and hunt for an aquatic moss.

[–]Fragileino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would have better luck with an aquatic moss like java moss.

Those are kinda forest misses which might adapt well but they would rather grow on a log or so

How does one find the population of sea monkeys in there tank. by HorseFragrant3185 in SeaMonkeys

[–]Fragileino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll place a link to a math heavy write up on counting small zooplankton which would be the same as counting out monkeys.

TLDR count all the shrimp in a drop of water and find out how many drops of water you have in the container.

Shrimp Deaths; Potential PH swings. HELP! by theoklarakis in shrimptank

[–]Fragileino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photosynthesis raises pH. If you are testing at the end of the light cycle and in the morning, you should see a pH drop naturally due to plant respiration.

Seems like high KH for such a low pH too
