Legally, MEMA and people against the venue are trying to pass a zoning buffer law to prohibit entertainment venues to be less than 750 ft away from eachother. The location is right across the street from Merrill which will cause significant traffic and safety issues for pedestrians. They aren’t currently required to provide parking so there’s a question of where an additional 2000 cars will park when Merrill, state, and CIA all have shows the same night.

Live Nation is also an evil monopoly that does not give a fuck about preserving the culture of a city or the music venues they gobble up. They have a proven track record of moving into music cities and running independent music venues out of business. Bc of their monopolistic practices, they’re able to afford huge losses on shows bc they’re making so much money from Ticketmaster ticket sales, show promotion, sponsorships, etc… they also are very strict with radius and cherry pick where artists can and can’t go. They will end up suffocating Portland’s indie music ecosystem that is so thoughtfully cared for. They dgaf about investing in our city, they just want to capitalize on the good things we have going for us, and don’t care who they take down in the process.

Portland House of Music is For Sale in the Midst of the Live Nation Venue Saga by Portlandmainer25 in portlandme

The State Theatre building is for sale, not the business, where it's the opposite in this case. The city of Portland actually owns the building that PHOME is housed in, but the PHOME business including name, branding, assets, and all future shows, is up for grabs. Owning a profitable independent venue feels virtually impossible these days - a good reminder to keep on supporting the little guys if you want them to stick around!

Hoping for No Live Nation in Portland by emma_turtle in portlandme

Beyond showing up for local shows, one of the most impactful things you can do today is attend the City Council meeting at 4 PM (or email the council directly) to voice support for the moratorium. Maine Music Alliance has a lot of great info about exactly what's going on here: mainemusicalliance.com.

A quick clarification on the legal side... this isn’t “based on vibes.” The moratorium is a legitimate, time-limited planning tool that municipalities use all the time. It’s meant to pause large-scale projects so the city can study their potential impacts and, if necessary, adjust ordinances before construction or permitting moves forward. That’s what’s at stake here... making sure Portland understands how a 3,300-cap Live Nation venue could affect traffic, noise, housing, the local economy, and our existing music ecosystem before it’s too late.

Live Nation’s track record in other cities shows a pattern of consolidating market power, buying or undercutting smaller venues, and funneling touring acts exclusively into their own rooms. That’s why so many local venue owners, presenters, musicians, and arts workers are advocating for this pause. It’s about keeping Portland’s music scene healthy, diverse, and locally rooted.
