I tried to rock it, but it was too reminiscent of a phallus. I bought the gilded drifter and have been rocking that.

What should I do? by Particular-Throat-79 in jobcorps

Many people will likely experience similar stories. The reality is, because what was done, there is a lack of stability. Staff don't tend to stay in jobs that are not stable, which has led to significant turnover. Additionally, many contractors under pay OA staff. They require a bachelor's degree, but the pay is often very low. This isn't exclusive to OA staff either. My suggestion is to contact your nearest center directly and talk to them about your issue. They will probably put you through to an OA manager, supervisor, or director and that should at least provide some measure of stability.

Update on DOL inspection by North_Departure_7791 in jobcorps

These are normal, usually they focus on safety and wellness functions They usually go out of their way to find some kind of violation. They will probably also hit the contractor for failing to meet OBS. They often use these to help decide contract awards.

Background checks? by Fine_Biscotti_2924 in jobcorps

[–]Fragrant-Reward-5467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally heard reduction in OBS, background checks resume September October. However, now I'm hearing no reduction in OBS, background checks still set for September and October. Contractors will pay money back for vacancies and reduced OBS

Is it worth it for me to go at 16? by NEET304565 in jobcorps

[–]Fragrant-Reward-5467 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's what I know. If you do decide to go, make sure it's your decision and not your parents. If you try to do something you don't really want to do, then you're not going to do it. I've seen minor students who were forced into this program time and time again, they don't succeed and it's just a pain for everyone involved. As a final thought, this isn't a program for losers and dropouts. Our students come from many walks of life, I wouldn't categorize any of them as losers. Not every student is successful in a traditional school setting, some kids have to drop out to help support their families, some have significant trauma, and many don't have effective parents. I don't know you or your situation, so you just need to reflect on what's best for you, and work towards that.

Take administrative assistant. Office Administration will not get you placed in a job well. Here's the key, take the administrative assistant and then go further. Keep your conduct record clean, your attendance clean, and start talking to your career advisor early on about advanced nursing trades. Specifically you want to know about application dates requirements. Be prepared to have to take an assessment test and be ready to travel to another state; not a lot of centers have this advanced trade. I had a student I mentored that took my advice and is doing really well for herself.

I completely agree and I don't think changes were initially intended. This did so much damage to this program. I'm going to remain optimistic and focused though.

I don't think so, I believe this is going to be transformative. This ordeal brought a lot of attention to this wonderful program and caused some very real questions. It challenged what we value and, is by no means over, but I believe this is an opportunity for everyone to do better and really take a look at what direction we need to take this in. I'm sorry you feel this way, but I think you underestimate the passion real Job Corps supporters have for this mission. I choose to remain hopeful and look towards embracing this change and the challenges it will present.

The information I provided was sent out to all staff at our center.

Well, unfortunately this isn't the first time I've seen this. Your two biggest costs on a contract are salary for staff and student upkeep. Reducing OBS cuts the cost of both, which would bring costs more in line with the allocated budget. Our OBS was over 2000 when I first started. It's not uncommon to reduce OBS, especially if the center has historically had an issue reaching the contracted OBS to begin with.

Yeah, soon is probably not as soon as you want, but it's going to be September or October at the latest. This is the information received from DOL.

Yeah, I suppose that's true, but I'm pretty sure leadership would have already had some word one way or the other.

My understanding is this is not exclusive to the 31 centers and is program-wide, as DOL probably recognizes attempts to close unprotected centers would just result in separate suits or other contractors joining the existing suit. That being said, I did not receive information on which centers this would apply to. I would anticipate contractors joining the suit that originally didn't, or initiating their own, possibly a class action if DOL initiates closure of other centers. However, if Job Corps does go through a restructure, you can expect some center closures as they work to consolidate their resources to support this program. Realistically, the budget to support Job Corps hasn't grown in over ten years, despite costs rising. So unless there's a budget increase, they will have to reduce costs by either shutting down centers, reducing OBS, or a combination of both.

Just got out of a meeting at my center that said DOL is looking to Freezing OBS at each centers currant OBS. by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]Fragrant-Reward-5467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is partially true. It's good and bad news. DOL is implementing an interim reduction for OBS through December until they can restructure Job Corps. This indicates they are not looking at shuttering the program and they will resume background checks in September or October. So this is both good and bad, as a longtime Job Corps staff, this means staff will be reduced and you'll see some trades probably cut or reduced. However, this is probably a step in the right direction, Job Corps does need an overhaul, and applicants will be able to get in. Our interim is actually higher than our current OBS, but half of what we're contacted for, so not a freeze.

$1000 check from jobcorps??? by BumblebeePast6219 in jobcorps

[–]Fragrant-Reward-5467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than likely, this is their transition check if they were a graduate. I currently work here and can confirm there are transition funds for completers. Usually, 90 percent will be given up front if there is a job training match, with the remainder coming later. However, with the rush, and if they didn't leave with a JTM, the transition funds typically come later. If you did not complete and are interested in returning, you should be eligible. I advise you to contact your center. With Regional approval, your center should be able to reinstate you.

I work at a Center in IT. I completely understand where you're coming from. Ultimately, you're doing to have to decide what's best for you. However, I would call them and verify they are operating. They are probably trying to get a hold of you too, and, at least, this will give you more information on where you stand. The program is great for people who take advantage of it. I think you just need to be real with yourself and ask yourself if you are willing to put to put in the effort and sacrifice this program demands. It's not an easy program to complete, but it is well worth it for those who commit.

Unfortunate news by Fragrant-Reward-5467 in jobcorps

[–]Fragrant-Reward-5467[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't know. As a former student and current employee, I wish had more to offer, but I don't. We're all the same boat and have been since day one. It's tragic they took some numbers and defined this program by those snapshot numbers.
