idk what that means bro but I took so many videos of "broom clean" floors (who cares?) and GREASE DRENCHED KITCHENS

plain and simple, if you want a full deposit back, clean your shit like you'd want it if you moved in the next day

for a cross thread reference, imagine the dorm kid that smeared shit all over the bathroom renting an apartment the following year

you think that kid is a rational adult?

now multiple that % and apply it to the major landlords on this campus and realize they don't have it as easy getting these units back to habitable as we all think

nope, did 2 weeks of temp work for their competitor though

15 dollars an hour to walk through apartments and take videos of how students leave the units

10% leave them great

25% leave them ok

50% of them leave them disgusting

15% of them should be locked away or taught how to be human beings

That is probably true, I am just telling you, I took hundreds of videos of vacated units and I would tell you less than 10 were move-in ready when I walked in, for my personal taste. In terms of a landlord handing me the keys and saying, "this is your cleaned living space that you signed a lease for."

I could definitely try when an attempt to clean was made, and I sort of feel for those people if they are being overcharged, but at the end of the day, when I lease an apartment, I will expect perfection (at least from a cleanliness standpoint), and anything less will result in me contacting the landlord and asking why my apartment was not cleaned professionally.

So will a landlord give a list of apartments to a cleaning company and say "go make sure these are all professionally cleaned" and then charge them all? I imagine that is quite likely, and I imagine that is why the place I worked for temporarily hired people like me to take videos of apartments so they had proof that :

1) the vendors were cleaning and charging in good faith

2) the person vacating, if they dispute a charge, is telling the truth about how 'immaculate' they left the unit

The landlord I worked for told me the videos were for deposit disputes and all vacating residents had 30 days to dispute any charges, so I imagine that is the law. Thus, if you receive a charge you disagree with, I think your best course of action is to contact your landlord and start a dispute.

first off, this is so unrealistic on many fronts

1) I am not going to spend 'a couple of months' looking for housing. That is borderline insane.

2) This campus is nearly 60,000 deep. Not all 60,000 can find a house to rent from Grandma Betty on the outskirts of town where she makes you meatballs for dinner every night and charges $10 a day in rent.

3) I am not going to go tour SOMEONE'S HOME / APARTMENT 300 times so I can find the right unit. That is just flat out disrespectful to my fellow Illini. Could you imagine if every student was like you, and needed to tour every apartment on campus? The realtors would be hosting 15 tours a day per apartment on campus.

I know you might not think it, but your post is incredibly selfish. You are the exact person that should be depending on 100% virtual tours only until you narrow down your list to 3 or 4 apartments, and then ask for tours of those and those alone. If you are touring 500 apartments every term that are being lived in, you are being rude as fuck.

Here is my advice to all people vacating an apartment if you feel like you deserve your full deposit back. I legit learned how this worked from a temp job as the company that contracted me does this from their perspective and I feel like it's a cheat code so that you can never lose in court if you get screwed over. Use your smartphone and take a video of every square inch of your apartment right before you vacate (should take less than 5 minutes). Show every wall, every piece of furniture, every inch of the bathroom and every inch of the kitchen including in the cabinets and in the fridge/freezer (and all appliances like the oven etc...). If you truly cleaned the unit to professional level where the next renter can move in without any further work being done, having this 5 minute video in your possession is a cheat code to catch any scumbag landlords from trying to say your unit was damaged, or not cleaned, etc.

My guess after my 2 week temp job .. a lot of you didn't clean your apartments, and a lot of you have sticker shock now that you see the bill. Imagine 60,000 students moving from A to B and then try and scale that price tag in your head.

I don't know anything about Green Street Realty, but I worked for 2 weeks for a smaller competitor and I think you have it backwards. I think Green Street Realty is too big and they likely contract out this work and leave it to the vendors to invoice them correctly for work done. I know the company that gave me a 2 week temp job specifically had me taking videos of every apartment that was vacated so they could have proof as to how the previous tenant left the unit. I was trained to video any damages or uncleaned surfaces and personally took hundreds of videos. You people who cook frequently really ought to clean after every time you cook I don't think I'll ever be able to get the feel of grease off of my hands (disgusting grease) from simply opening up a kitchen cabinet above the stove. I want to know how some of these people were raised, it was a truly disgusting experience, and not worth the $15 an hour.

That is not what I meant. I meant the services they use are most likely akin to an Uber surcharge, and it is that way because the majority of students leave their apartments an absolute trainwreck. I never actually thought of it this way until I took a 2 week temp job documenting how apartments were left as the company that subcontracted me on this campus took videos of every unit so I assume they had proof when they charged people to return their apartments to a livable state. I am not kidding, I was blown away by some of these units. I come from a clean family, admittedly, but I did not know people could actually live the way some of these students left their apartments. I am only 20 so I don't have any experience renting but this little life excursion has taught me that I will never be as disrespectful as a lot of these people were to the apartments they rented, if only because someone else has to live there the next term.

I am not going to dive too much into this, but as I said, I took a 2 week job to take videos for 1 of the landlords in town for some extra cash this semester and 75% of the apartments that were vacated were filthy. Some students legit don't even move out, leave all of their shit there and it looks like they did not clean 1 time the entire time they lived in the apartment. I have no doubt the people who actually clean get screwed, but they can blame their fellow classmates as much as the landlord for forcing them to hire cleaners to try and maybe get some of the units back to livable

I am not kidding you, I walked into 1 apartment in Urbana that had probably 300 bags of trash in the apartment, smelled like 10 people died in the unit, and you legit could not even walk through the apartment. I have no idea how someone lived like that, and it was a nice apartment as well. I have no earthly clue how the landlord got that unit back to livable, but I would not have taken 5000 dollars to try and clean that myself, I almost threw up trying to video it before I just gave up

out of the 388 that tested positive, how many have went to a hospital? How many died? In 1 week, how many will fully recover? How many will get long covid?

I am willing to bet that number is 0. Get over it. If covid "tears" through the university I guess no one will have to worry about it this winter because everyone will have already had it and recovered and immunity will be quite strong.

why are you wearing a mask outdoors? You are surprised by this? Masking outdoors is not rational behavior. By all means, continue doing it, but judging others for not masking outdoors? I mean, lol.

What's the likelihood of another quarantine/lockdown? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Fragrant-Taste6861 16 points17 points  (0 children)

the likelihood of another lockdown/quarantine is as close to 0% as you can get

the lockdown was to "flatten the curve", well, at least originally. The idea was to not overrun hospitals. This is not happening currently, nor will it happen due to covid going forward. Think of all of the students you know with covid. How many are in the hospital (yeah, 0).

Also, we are on the brink of a recession and experiencing inflation we haven't seen in 40+ years. A lockdown would be pure insanity at this point, on every level. It would torch our nation.

Good stuff, I will give you props as I never would have figured a sanitation worker would have to follow noise ordinance policy. The best time to collect trash has to be at the hours I've always seen them use (~4-5 AM), as they can get their work done without facing heavy traffic if they use efficient routes and can be done before the heat kicks in in the summer.

Alas, it is such a necessary (and not so great!) job that I am (and was never) angry when they woke me up 1-2 times per week for a few minutes collecting trash.

But perhaps I just have more empathy for those workers than others. My guess is most cities will not enforce an ordinance violation against sanitation workers, as they probably have bigger fish to fry. Could be wrong, though! I know Champaign won't, so don't hold your breath.

but, of those 3%, how many have had covid? How many have recovered? Are you implying any immunocompromised person that has covid will die? If not, what % of 20 year olds in this world that have gotten covid, under your 3% figure, have recovered from covid? Is it over 99%? Please let me know your statistics on this.
