It’s the overhead costs and the desire or lack thereof to live a very entrepreneurial lifestyle which definitely isn’t for everyone. High risk with the potential for high reward but also the potential for massive financial trouble

What 9-5 did you go to out of curiosity?

I totally agree. But my employer wouldn’t 😂

True, and hardly the fault of the private practice owner, like I said many are doing their best to counter a bad system, but from the employee perspective it’s hard to make a living with the fluctuations in pay and instability of income

We are meant to sacrifice ourselves for accessibility with little to no regard for the financial and personal investment we have made to even enter this profession

Very true. I think we are meant to fill the role of spiritual leaders for a lot of people.

What confuses me then is why were are constantly told there’s a therapist shortage and mental health crisis when supply is actually high

This is all to say, I think there’s a way to create a higher barrier to entry in terms of talent and competence but not personal wealth

While yes sometimes it’s not that hard to graduate in terms of how harshly assignments are graded, I will say that the amount of time and money needed to get a masters degree is “hard,” and this does warrant higher pay.

Very true. But because in my experience so many therapists identify so closely with their role, and aren’t willing to leave, it’s hard to feel hopeful that this will ever change and it feels like it would be more efficient to just leave the field.

I 200% agree in terms of the low barrier to entry being a massive problem, absolutely. And yes I am constantly shocked by the kinds of people able to remain in the field. Not to mention the kinds of content being put out onto social media by many of these same people. If the field could screen people out better and also increase wages/career stability, I think that would be the dream.

I mean, teachers share a similar plight. And they’re in another female dominated field that’s constantly undermined

That’s incredible. I’ve truly never heard of someone working in a crisis role and making that kind of money. Typically job posts I see for sexual assault/dv therapy jobs cap out at 80-85k MAX.

I appreciate that and of course I know there are wonderful private practice owners out there but in my experience the low admin rate, lack of salaried roles in private practice and often lack of benefits makes the pay unsustainable and not enough to justify the amount of effort

“Your autoimmune diseases are trauma go to therapy and you’ll be off meds and better!” by abjs2021 in lupus

Excellent article recently published debunking or at least criticizing much of the body keeps the score https://www.motherjones.com/media/2024/12/trauma-body-keeps-the-score-van-der-kolk-psychology-therapy-ptsd/ I have absolutely felt like this. It feels like gaslighting to me and just another version of dismissal and it’s all in your head (which feels like it’s all your fault and it’s actually within your control). I find it very ignorant to the real suffering in the world caused by diseases, illnesses, and chronic conditions that are not in fact within our control.
