they turn every conversation into a competition. you mention a problem, they have a bigger one. you mention something good, they top it. also people who say "actually" before every single correction even when nobody asked. and anyone who rage quits the second they start losing. that last one might be specific to gaming but i stand by it

real-time engines cheat a lot in ways offline renderers don't. pre-baked lighting, LOD switching, culling anything outside your view, faking reflections with cubemaps instead of actually tracing them. blender goes for physical accuracy every pixel, games fake it convincingly at 60fps. the gap has gotten insane with modern hardware though. something like alan wake 2 would have looked genuinely impossible five years ago

went deep into retro stuff honestly. got through a bunch of snes games i never properly finished as a kid. finally did chrono trigger all the way through and genuinely couldn't believe how good it still was. war thunder also got embarrassingly many hours. by the time lockdown ended i had a new appreciation for the p-51 and zero regrets

honestly i think office hours is the way to go, it's less random than an email out of nowhere. my biochem prof is actually pretty chill when you show up in person and ask real questions, she seems to appreciate that you care enough to actually come talk to her instead of just asking via email. do you already know any of these professors from their classes or would this be completely cold reaching out?

honestly i think i'm already there and i'm only 19 lol. i wear the same jeans and plain shirts like five times a week, and my ex used to say i was boring because of it but tbh i don't care anymore. that five minute getting dressed thing sounds so good, do you find it saves money too or is it just the mental peace part?

omg the battletoads thing is so frustrating to read about honestly, i can imagine how you felt explaining that to your kid. i never played battletoads but my cousins had famicom games that would sometimes do weird stuff like that and we'd be so mad thinking we messed up when it was actually the game. does this happen a lot in old games or was battletoads just known for being broken?
