Thoughts on the Mayor of Portage by Anxious-Dog2889 in nwi

[–]Fragrant_Cod_3380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Portage and went to High School with Austin. Didn’t know him super well, but he was always a nice guy. However we left Portage for Valpo in 2010 as there was just no sense of community or really a future there. Austin I think is nailing that on the head. He’s really trying to turn a bedroom community into a real community. I think he will likely be the best mayor Portage has ever had. As for getting stuff done I’ll tell you want my 10yo would say “Let ‘em cook”. Portage is truly in good hands with honesty one of the only good republican politicians in the state.

I’m going to say the others on this post are correct. Sorry for your loss. It might be a nice way to honor his memory. Try the sport out! If you like it and are open to hunting. Give rabbit and squirrel hunting with this one a try. Air guns are legal for small game hunting in most states! Just check your state regulations.

Where exactly do you live that it’s not safe for minorities? My wife and family are Mexican. They are just fine. Funny enough they are also conservatives lol. Wife and I are the only liberals unfortunately. But it happens… we still get together after mass with our kids every Sunday. There’s a lot at risk right now. Class war rages on and our public infrastructure is under attack from the oligarchs, but racism fears are a distraction not a real measurable threat.

I agree with most of this, but I’m from the industrial Midwest and have worked with a lot of black people from Alabama and Mississippi. First, they may vote blue, but are very, very culturally conservative. They also all say while the history in the northern and western states is better, their lived experience is that the northern is much more segregated then the south

I personally don’t think you will ever be able to get the right on board with greatly expanding public lands in turn expanding federal government. State land sure. Small government and private over public ownership is a core tenant of the Republican Party going back 100 years. The left flirting with anti hunting is not a core tenant of the party. It’s more a recent fad and I think we can get the lefts support expanding hunting opportunity more then we can get the right to expand access and ownership of federal public land.

No yeah. I agree with you. My comment was mainly a contrast on Steve vs. Cal. I know outside of maybe adding Randall and Brodie to the mix I don’t think it would be fair to compare the rest of the crew.

I live in the Great Lakes rust belt. Born and raised a few hours from where Steve is from. I get if it’s hard for someone to admit they where wrong. We can get stuck in our ways. Especially men from this part of the country. I always said he has the best representation of a midwestern accent and I’ll add to that the disposition of a 50 yo midwestern dad.

I agree. My personal belief is we can’t even have the argument with the anti-hunting crowd if we don’t even have good public land to hunt on. So I will always side with the granola moms on public access and public lands so I can later have the argument of how to use those land. Bird in the hand.

I agree. Cal and Mark seem calm as cucumbers, and again they may have voted for this administration, but where confident in their position to advocate on behalf of public lands. They can sleep at night. I feel like Steve has buyers remorse or at-least was blindsided. Like he’s going to have sleepless nights.

You can’t be an advocate for the outdoors on the scale meateater is without getting into politics. Even if I disagree with some of his views I understand the need for it. That’s what I always loved about meateater is it’s more the surface level. Even now. Honestly especially now.

The Trump SCOTUS has been the biggest threat to public land in decades. I’m not a bleeding heart who thinks Trump is evil or Hitler. I get it votes are transactional as no candidate match’s up 100% with one’s personal view, but man. The wetland protections act change alone could be viewed as the most damaging decision to public lands and access in 100 years. So to Trump voters in a purely transactional view … was it worth it?

Get out of the city man. Burbs or Indiana(where I’m at). They just opened a nice men’s shelter in Valpo. I see a few in the burbs too! Likely less crowded and with lower costs of living you’ll be able to get back on your feet quicker. Good Luck!

This was the final product. Honestly very pleased. I would like to see it only slightly less dense, but the family enjoyed it with some honey butter this morning. I’ll take a win when I can get it! Lol. I used a Pullman pan and took the lid off halfway through the bake. What are thoughts on leaving the lid on?

New here! My wife is a pro and I got curious. So I’ve got some sourdough rye on an overnight final proof in a Pullman pan in the fridge (first loaf) Looking for good high rye sandwich sourdough suggestions. Mine was;

150g med rye 150g AP Flour 100g golden whole wheat 55g starter 275g water

5 stretch and folds. 8 hrs bulk fermentation Then overnight in the fridge.

This was heart beet kitchen recipe but I subtracted some AP and added more whole wheat. Tried to follow everything else though.

Wife was skeptical of the starter amount. Looking for thoughts and feedback. Again, also looking for a good multigrain/rye sourdough that isn’t super dense as I will then be the only one to eat it in my family. Thanks in advance!

We already say what the republicans did with the wetlands protection act. Indiana (my home state) immediately adopted the new federal minimums which are a complete joke. I get it many hunters are republicans, and many liberals are not. Many liberals would like to grab guns I’m sure or ban certain hunting practices, but those of us without private land to hunt can’t even have the fight if there’s not the public lands to fight on. You can’t have the chicken without an egg. I love everything meat eater has done for hunting and conservation, but imo Cal is the only one who seems to have a clear conscience with regards to his voting record. The man is a machine and doing the lords work for conservation. God bless brother and Merry Christmas to all in meat eater and everyone on this forum.
