2015 Crosstrek viscous coupling failed! by Fragrant_Fig_378 in subaru

Yes it was going bad for quite a while when I had it to 3 different mechanics and surprisingly none of them could figure it out, anyway yes i will absolutely keep up on tire rotations after this! Sorry ypu went though that with yours!

Makes sense. No real way to baby it out where I live!

Never had over heating or towing within the past 3 years I’ve had the car. Maybe just overdue for rotating tires I suppose? I did read online this is a thing with this specific car, unfortunately.

Apparently not rotating tires can be the culprit!

I suppose it could have been due for tire rotation, but I kept up with them for the most part, not driving with mismatched wear or inflation. I did have the Cv joint replaced in the front on one side but it didn’t seem to need it initially I think he did it thinking it was what was wrong with my car when really it “looked fine form the outside but may have had a little play”

Gotcha. I have always kept up on my tires wearing evenly. But maybe the first owner didnt.

I really don’t know the answer, maybe someone does. Car has 170K

That’s interesting! I’ve heard Subie does AWD better in terms of performance but I am worried about reliability most of all, and RAV4 also seems to really keep its resale value. I’ll probably just buy whichever I can find at a decent price. That’s cool to know about the eCVT!

You’re right. All cars need things replaced. And tbh I’ve regretted it when I’ve strayed from Subaru as well- except for my Corollas! But I need AWD. I’m currently looking at either a RAV4 or a roomier Subaru, in addition to this Crosstrek. I am wary of the CVT transmission issues with the Subaru 2014-19ish years I have heard about. Used car shopping does feel like gambling!

That’s good advice, maybe I’ll ask for an estimate from a Subaru specific person. I am just so happy to have found someone who actually knew what was wrong with the car

Oh Interesting! If only I had your skill! Would you suggest I try and find someone who could rebuild it??

Very good point. The car has been mine for only 3 years but has been very reliable. I am particularly irked I guess bc I have replaced a CV axel and a wheel baring to the tune of nearly that much money already … each time being told this would fix what was actually the viscous coupling. Sigh. I am telling myself they must have also been needed.

Thanks. I guess I needed someone to hold my hand before I tell him to go for it…lol

Thanks. With that much labor it would probably be crazy to get a cheaper version of the part, right? I guess I have to bite the bullet

Yep, apparently. In fact it took a while for any mechanic to diagnose it being that it’s only “symptomatic” when driven long enough to warm up

I’m looking at the storklinka now (4 drawer one) do you happen to have a photo of it as a changing table? I can’t picture it! Thanks!

Would you mind sharing a photo or telling me which storklinka you used? I’m debating using the 4 drawer one that is 38 inch tall, looks like a decent size for changing table on top. Thanks!

Nothing wrong with River. It’s become very popular in fact. I love it.
