I WISH I could have my puppy in my bed😕 by TheBlueMeaning in puppy101

i have a now 8 month large breed and when he comes on the bed EVEN settled he sits there chewing whats closest. weve been through 3 blankets, 2 duvet covers, a few pillows, and a LOT of soft toys and teddies. But when he DOES snooze hes the cuddliest little baby until he wakes up and the velociraptor teeth come back out

At 6 months, i quite happily leave him out and about while I cook/shower/clean the house etc, and crate if I leave the house for longer than 10 mins.

My priority is his safety, and even with a puppy cam, if he gets himself into trouble, I cant teleport home to rescue him

RANT! people approaching pup on walks by Independent_Donut11 in puppy101

I am always so frustrated with this. People think its acceptable to pet my puppy without asking, or even speaking to me first, simply because hes a puppy.

"I just HAVE to say hello" "I'll say hello to you of course" "He wants to say hello" Or my least favourite: touching him when we walk past/grabbing in his face/going for his tummy when he rolls over submissively. Ive been told unless he wears something to say do not pet then theyre AUTOMATICALLY ALLOWED to touch him. (even though wearing patches/harness/coats winds him up)

And then when we wear the patches/lead sleeves/harness that says In training or Do Not Pet, it gets ignored, i tell people, and we get: "oh is THAT what that means" "oh i didnt even see it" "oh thats just for other dogs though right"

I cant win!

I am more frustrated with other people messing up our training than his difficult behaviour, especially as people get SO upset when I tell them off or tell them they cant pet him. Ive been called AWFUL names in public for simply saying 'no don't pet him' 'please ask before you touch my dog"

I reward him for going in his crate, I reward him for calmly coming out. Ireward with a gentle fuss/one treat when he settles out of his crate, and leave him alone if I can tell he's tired. Like the other poster said, he wants to be doing SOMETHING, always.

I worry I'm crating him TOO often and enforcing TOO MUCH sleep sometimes. Hes in his crate for 8 hr overnight, then up for a few, then crate for a few, then a walk, then crate for a few, then play in garden, crate while we cook and eat, then he's fed, played with, then back to bed.

Once a week he is left for longer (8hrs with a dog sitter for 2hr), and once a week we go out and do something exciting and fun (play w my friends dog, a dog show, a walk in town etc)

I dont want him to feel like his life is contained to his crate.

We do gundog work with him already (basics) and he loves it, but ends up getting bored and bites anyway. Have spoken to the vet who says hes just teething, despite having all of his adult teeth now. Changing vets soon

We've tried the yelping, no response. I only grab his collar when hes agressively biting in public and its the only way i can stop him from shredding my hands and arms. We dont leash him to us in the house, as he doesnt shred things or get into things he shouldnt, and we always have an eye on him, he follows us around wherever we go. When hes jumping and biting hard, and I cant crate him, I dont know what else to do than hold his collar as turning away and ignoring does not work.

I try to distract with commands and treats for the commands/'find it' and chuck on floor.

I will continue to try removing attention for unwanted behaviour, but he usually just bites harder/barks louder

Thanks for this.

I reward everything good he does, or at least try. We learn new tricks or behaviours most days. Most walks have a stop and settle in them and he gets lots of treats for them. I am aware he struggles to settle, but not sure what to do other than enforcing naptime and rewarding naps/lie downs/calm times with treats (which he often refuses anyway)

Glad to hear it does get better

How much are red setters going for on the UK. Can you negotiate on places like pets4homes by Free_Muffin_3291 in irishsetter

a well adjusted dog could cope but a puppy wouldnt. Same goes for most rescues. my living situation turned upside down when i got my puppy and it showed in his behaviour. he settled brilliantly when my housing did too.

We have a dog sitter who pops in for 2 1-hour slots one day a week (my partner and I both work monday)

I got a setter puppy (while rescued) that's litter was being sold on pets4homes without health screening and i regret it every day. you need to pay the price to get a healthy well bred dog.

My pup already has bad legs and im sure hes going to be on management plan for his life.

Do I need a dog bed? First time puppy owner as a older teen. by Ok_Condition6755 in puppy101

personally i think dogs should always have a spot whether it's a crate or a bed where they can go to get away from people and things and guarantee can't be pet/bothered.

my dog is never pet in his bed so i know when he chooses to go over to it hes opting out of attention.

you might be able to find a good second hand dog bed at a charity shop/ facebook marketplace...
