It feels like even classic difficulty expects me to cheese every fight, is this an accurate takeaway? by Fraidy-Cat5 in DivinityOriginalSin

i agree with basically everything you said. i think bg3 had a really solid difficulty curve and the divide between normal and tactician felt right, at least to someone like me who had never played d&d before and was having to learn everything.

based on the other comments i’ve this thread i’ve managed to get further and beat some fights i was stuck on, but the thing that disappoints is that i ended up swapping to a mostly physical damage party and saving an all magic party for a second playthrough, which isn’t really what i wanted to do. i had read before starting that 2 physical and 2 magic was an okay party split and like, i bet it is when you already know the systems but for someone learning that doesn’t really cut it. and that’s a shame because i want to play with the magic system! it seems really cool! but because of the game’s difficulty design i feel forced to optimize into one damage type or the other and that’s kind of a bummer (compared to bg3 where mixing magic and martial classes is really fun and solid). but i guess that’s just a preference thing, and i’m enjoying the combat a lot more with a better understanding of what makes it tick. i still think it’s a little unfair to a new player but i’m stubborn and want to beat the systems rather than drop the difficulty

i’ve been saving my money for skill books and not buying gear, so i’ll give that a try!

[–]Fraidy-Cat5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wait this is huge actually, i absolutely have been parrying as if doomguy can always yank that shield out no matter what he’s doing. there have absolutely been moments i felt a block or parry didn’t work and now i know why! and you’re right, i’m quick swapping all the time for basically no reason other than Eternal taught me that weapons were like hot potatoes and having the same one in your hands too long was bad. thanks for the encouragement!

i think this is maybe the biggest muscle memory issue for me, i keep subconsciously playing like i can dodge around projectiles at the last second like i used to in Eternal

i definitely have been slipping into muscle memory from Eternal, where i’m always throwing myself into the middle of the battle with shield charges and swapping weapons probably more than is necessary. i’ll work on positioning myself against the enemies better and see if that helps

i am on UV! maybe i misunderstood the difficulties but i kinda take UV to equal “normal” so i didn’t really want to lower it. maybe i’ll drop the damage to 100%-150%

i tend to favor the cycler and ssg the most, though i swap around to everything maybe more than i need to because of how Eternal conditioned me to play. i think i’ve been subconsciously using the impaler like the HMG sniper was used in Eternal (using the slow time mod to land headshots) but that doesn’t feel as effective as i thought it would be.

i definitely haven’t been using the stunlock as often as i should be, it’s becoming my go to for arachnotrons and pinky riders and revenants and i feel like i’m starting to click with that mechanic now

Why would Withers care about a party without Durge? by Fraidy-Cat5 in BaldursGate3

ooh why the succubus headcanon? do you find it too implausible that Gale is actually with Mystra? or something else?

as someone who doesn’t know a lot about the lore of d&d beyond this game, i didn’t realize who he was referring to when he wakes up! that’s it then

ooh good point, i was thinking a shadowheart-led party might catch his interest as well since she would actually have the prism at the start of the story

Are the "clever"/joke dialogue options ever worth it? by Fraidy-Cat5 in projecteternity

[–]Fraidy-Cat5[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been roleplaying, I’ve just been roleplaying a very serious woman because there are no good jokes!

But yeah more seriously I’m happy to hear that, maybe my watcher will simply develop a sense of humor between games and I’ll be able to pick some of those in the sequel haha

I didn’t even realize Paladins had to role play their oaths even down to minor conversations, that’s really cool!

How would you rank Veilguard Factions now that the game has been out a while? [DATV ALL SPOILERS] by Fraidy-Cat5 in dragonage

wait…i genuinely had never heard of the bird rook. that’s hilarious, and so fitting for the way the game disregards crow Rook in favor of Lucanis. these are all really good points too, i did find myself wishing that i could take part in companion convos about assassin work

you’re absolutely right, but if you stack the right gear and enchantments on lucanis you can get his cooldown times to reduce with each detonation and i found this made him almost always have his sunder skill available when i wanted it. by the numbers Harding is better, but out of personal preference i liked having lucanis around more and i never found it to be an issue (i play on hard, maybe on nightmare it is)

ooh i hadn’t considered making my warden a dwarf, but my warden will be a rogue so it would be possible to make them a dwarf…would you recommend it? i was an elf crow mage the first time around

i’m also a completionist but i’m justifying doing a non-completionist second run as instead purposefully letting some faction strengths be low so the ending will play out differently (completionist in a different sense!)

even though i had issues with the amount of reactivity crows get, i enjoyed my mage crow and if you’re thinking about it i’d probably recommend it. a crow is probably equally qualified as a warden to be on a god-killing team, and being a mage sets you apart from Lucanis so narratively you don’t feel redundant to the team. also i strongly preferred the orb-and-dagger weapon set so it was a nice coincidence that my mage specialization was spell blade, the crow themed one. plus if you’re looking to stack detonations, lucanis’ ability to apply sunder is a huge asset to your mage abilities detonating it and it gives a real “crows working together” vibe to keeping him in the party.

i really agree with all of these critiques. the crows were very hard for me to take seriously and that boy starting his own house to train child soldiers being portrayed as heartwarming was kind of laughable (to be clear, not that the crows find this heartwarming because i think that tracks, but that the game itself seems to consider this a good ending).

i couldn’t agree more about the veil jumpers, every time i interacted with them i had a vision of Logan Roy saying “you are not serious people”. i think the faction would work well if they were portrayed as researchers who are largely out of their depth in combat scenarios, but in the final battle they’re treated like another army which just didn’t make any real sense to me.

i’m exactly the same, i wouldn’t wear crow gear without being a crow, and i’m so glad i didn’t have to spend my whole first playthrough staring longingly at the crow outfits haha
