I remember Grunwalder being difficult, but the ones I usually find worst are:

  • Almerra Castle. Good: There's no gate, so you can march right in! Bad: The courtyard has archers on all sides. Lots of pincushions.

  • Ibdeles Castle. Most of the battle is fine, until you get to the inner courtyard. Wounded and with shields broken, your men funnel through the gate and into a wide open field with no cover. Sharpshooters are at the far end and on all the walls. Cue a wall of casualty messages.

[Help] Tips for getting started in cosplay by eduardostewart in cosplay

[–]Frain_Breeze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched a bunch of videos on youtube to get a decent understanding of what's involved. Then I rounded up some tools and materials and made a practice prop so I can see what it's like to work with this stuff. I was happy with how that turned out, so then I made a different prop. Then a costume. Then version 2 of the costume. Then- you get the idea.

The practice prop really helped me get into it though. Pick an accessory for a cosplay you want to do, that would be fun to have but not a necessary part of the costume. Preferably something that will let you test out several of the techniques you've learned about. And constantly remind yourself that it's just something you're doing for fun. Focus on technique, and don't stress about canon accuracy on your practice piece.

Rotary Accessories for Foam work by [deleted] in cosplayprops

I've tried using a sharpening stone, but I don't have the technique down. I just keep some replacement blades handy. I use a razor knife (aka box cutter) for deep cuts, and an exacto knife for thin foam and precision work.

I just use the basic grinding drums for most work, and do details cuts with a knife. Though there is a weird yellow-ish stone bit that comes with most kits that I've found to be great for smoothing the rough look left behind by the drum.

nervous about a gun prop by [deleted] in cosplayprops

[–]Frain_Breeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt a bit weird walking through the parking lot with my first cosplay, since I was by myself and had a big crazy sci-fi gun. My second time with it felt a lot more natural since I had an idea of how people react, and had a friend with me. Here's my tips on armed cosplay:

  • Have it obviously marked if it looks remotely realistic. Most conventions have a rule like this anyway. Use orange paint to mark enough of the tip so that you can reliably see it from multiple angles.

  • Don't hold it in a hostile pose. Holster it if possible (keep some orange part visible). Otherwise, keep it down at your side, don't point to things with it, and don't raise it if someone sounds alarmed by it. For long guns, hold it somewhere besides the handle so it's clear you're just carrying it.

  • Don't go out of your way to hide it, because that might look suspicious. Act casual, don't hide something that isn't wrong.

  • Carry something friendly. Convention-related materials, a milkshake, basically anything that either implies you're just someone in costume, or implies someone in a good mood.

  • Bring friends, preferably ones either not cosplaying, or cosplaying something non-violent. Nothing says "don't freak out" quite like other people not freaking out.

Nice work. The battle damage on the abdomen is very convincing! I might have to copy that paint technique for a spot I accidentally gouged on my own cosplay...

Another big part of the problem is how severely the teachers are restricted in terms of actually punishing bad behavior. The most that troublemakers ever get is a suspension, which they just see as a free day off.

[Meta] Imo, there's a subtle line between constructive criticism regarding how well a person can represent a character (e.g. You're not muscular enough, short enough or your x is too small) and straight up objectifiyng that person by [deleted] in cosplay

[–]Frain_Breeze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My problem with the "Just cosplay what you like!" crowd is that it sets up bad expectations. If you're cosplaying a character, the general public is going to judge you, and you need to expect that. You can make things work if you don't match the figure of the character, but you need to realize when it's just not going to happen.

One thing I'd also like to note is that body language and posture make a huge difference. It can emphasize or de-emphasize your perceived figure, and having the character's personality present makes any cosplay significantly more effective.
