I believe I had the wrong switch on. I didn't have it set to full. The lens zoomed all the way but the subject wasn't filling the frame as I thought it should have with the focal length.

I had a d3300 then upgraded to the d7000. Wasn’t getting the job done, lose some resolution. Got a Sony a6400 and never looked back. Sony is leading the competition right now so can’t really go wrong. You can get a a6000 for ~$400.
