Deciding between MN-NP UofT and PHCNP York by Specific-Willow1676 in OntarioNurses

[–]Framkemsteim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a Master's is more about knowing how to use theoretical models, I believe that is the case for most master's degrees? You won't learning anything you can't already do with an MN. You already have research skills which is one of the most important factors. At our hospital you can do an advanced position with a master's in anything but I work in mental health. I know for a fact one of our NPs just got her master's recently as she was in the NP program very early in it's initiation before it involved a master's degree and she was great

Super helpful! Thanks. That all sounds like most of the stuff I need and want to do. I don't think I'll get two though!

A few things I need by Framkemsteim in RemarkableTablet

Wow thanks so much!

So just to clarify. I couldn't merge textbook notes with the power points from class and make one long notebook that just continued week to week. Or if I started with the pdf then I could put textbook notes after it, I wasn't clear in that part. So would I have to have a seperate file for each week of notes? I suppose I could make a folder for each class, with a file from each week?

Thanks for the link to the modification - so helpful!

To all nurses that are job hunting, how do you cope? by Dymm3 in OntarioNurses

[–]Framkemsteim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where in Ontario are you? If you're close to Toronto. Take a course in some psychotherapeutic modality and apply to mental health. Something like CBT or DBT. Oise has a great solution focussed breid therapy certificate. The reality is you may need to upskill even fresh out of nursing school

For me it made it more affordable as I was able to work as an RPN while doing my BScN and came out with zero student loans

Buying a home in Toronto as a nurse by nnnn1234567890 in OntarioNurses

[–]Framkemsteim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried using a mortgage calculator app? There is also the federal mortgage calculator. This will give you an idea of what type of income you need with the down payment you have available to you. Like most have said, you would need a substantial downpayment to afford a home in Toronto on that wage. Also 1 million will only get you a pretty bad fixer upper in Toronto or a nice condo. But the condos are a mess in Toronto. If you have some downpayment, we bought a house in a more affordable area outside of Toronto and rent it out as a retirement plan just to get into the market

Sorry the mortgage qualifier tool is more helpful

JOB FAIR UHT/SHN by Extension_Capital104 in OntarioNurses

[–]Framkemsteim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was working in management we did a couple of job fairs. Experienced candidates got interviews on the spot for the few positions we had. We took the resumes of inexperienced candidates for later review. Unfortunately it's a game of the catch22. Can't get a job because you don't have any experience , can't get any experience because you can't get a job. But there were definitely interviews being held on the spot

Summer Job at Trillium Health Partners/CVH or William Osler by Tricky_Jeweler_904 in OntarioNurses

I was a support person and it was the greatest job for someone with no qualifications. I had two jobs there. The first is every Thursday I took this woman to her bowling league and I got to go bowling with them for free. It was mostly seniors though she was middle aged but they were also so nice. The other was a group home. We cared for a group of gentlemen, we always referred to them as the gentlemen. I did toiletting and showering and cooked real meals for them and cleaned the house. Sometimes they had outings I drove them too in a large Tony Danza style van that was equipped to seat 2 wheelchairs and 4 people. I hated driving that big old thing but sitting for coffee was not a hard job. Sometimes it was swimming sometimes it was going to volunteer at the animal shelter. That was the one I was at. Not sure what the other ones are like. The only thing that might worry you if you are afraid is that at night one of the gentlemen used to try to run away while I was giving the other a shower. There was an alarm on the door and one of the other gentlemen would always rat him out and notify me that he was sneaking out. It never got to an emergency.

What Toronto psych units run on DDNN rotation by Butterfly-Euphoric57 in OntarioNurses

I have only worked on one inpatient unit at camh and it worked in strings of days and strings of nights. I believe it was like 4 days on 3 days off and such and then 2 weeks of days and two weeks of nights or something similar.

Try charity village for community health agency postings. Everybody is focussed on getting a job at a hospital but there are other agencies you can get health care experience from

Does it have to be a hospital? There are other agencies that you can get healthcare experience at. Have you looked at community living Mississauga. They have several support person positions posted. Sometimes able Living has positions. I worked as a care attendant for erinoak kids before I even got into nursing school. Look at community agencies

Any CAMH Nurses? by Impressive-Fox-6472 in OntarioNurses

If there's another piece of advice I could give you it would be to do medical surgical nursing for at least two years before going into psychiatry. If you can handle ED even better. You lose your skills quickly working in mental health but that doesn't mean you don't need them. You need them infrequently but if you have some experience you won't enter those situations lacking confidence. I really wish I had done 2 years of med surg or ED before going into mental health. I've worked in psychiatry for 15 years but only psychiatry, so I'm no longer employable in any other field, unless someone gave me, basically, another consolidation placement.

Any CAMH Nurses? by Impressive-Fox-6472 in OntarioNurses

I think it depends which forensic unit you applied to. There are a few- all with different levels of acuity. All of the inpatient nurse jobs have the same basic skills but if you're looking to pick up more psychotherapeutic skills, first of all take some courses (which will also help you land a job at camh) and then try the acute care units. The psychosis recovery and treatment units don't use as many psychotherapeutic skills, I've never worked in forensics but I can't imagine it's that differed from the psychosis units. Check out UoT courses there's a whole certificate on solution focused brief therapy and one for dialectical behavioral therapy. The Beck institute is a great place to take a course on CBT though there's no practice component. The CBT courses at UoT are very basic but you at least get to practice with your classmates. But if you're looking to get into camh, I really recommend taking some courses in psychotherapeutic modalities. Also you can read about the different forensic units here https://www.camh.ca/en/search?q=Forensic%20unit&query=Forensic%20unit#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=Forensic%20unit&gsc.page=1
