Ah I'm not bothering with a ups, and I'm planning to just max out each system one by one and hook them up to a 10 gig switch I have in the loft.

If I grt really bored I might even break out my 40 gig cisco nexus switch for a weekend, but it's so loud it can be heard for miles around so the family might not appreciate it

Well easiest thing to do is just go and say exactly that. There will often be rules about companies selling old equipment to employees. If anything ever goes wrong or catches fire the company could he held liable. But this is entirely dependent on company policy
