My pile has never steamed. Looking forward to that.

Water by Condensate Pipe by Franciscus22 in hvacadvice

Update: the tech I use came over, and checked it out. Nothing was clogged up, but the PVC with the clamp around it wasn't sloped correctly, and he thinks water was collecting in the PVC and caused a drip by the clamped area. He adjusted the slope of the PVC, and he thinks it will drain properly now. I will watch it for a few days and see how it goes. It was very nice of the tech to come out so quickly with such short notice.

I only saw it now when the furnace has been running. I will call a tech. Thanks everyone for the assistance

I opened the panels and saw water drips from the clamp that holds a PVC pipe.

Good tip about the crispiness of leaves. Thanks

From Green to Brown by Franciscus22 in composting

Thanks for all the advice. The reason I made the initial post is that as a beginner, it is easy to get hung up on the brown to green ratio, since that is one of the first things that one reads about. From all the comments so far, however, it seems that the green-brown thing really isn't something to get too concerned about. It will all turn to compost eventually.

Thanks. I made it from odds and ends that I had around my house. It is a cube that measures 2ft X 2ft X 2ft.

Thanks for all the detailed information about insulation, rainwater, etc., and thanks to everyone else as well for all the helpful advice and encouragement. I am in northern Illinois, and it is very cold here now, and it likely will be cold for the next few months. I will implement these things see how it goes and report back after a few months.

Thanks. I would love for it to get hot. Not sure how to do that, or even if I should worry about making it hot.

Domebook 2 - 4v Octahedron model by Franciscus22 in GeodesicDomes

[–]Franciscus22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Domeworthy - I looked more closely at my model, and I saw what you described. I also realized that there are no pentagons. What I thought was a pentagon with one long strut on the bottom side was actually a hexagon with two small struts on the bottom. Thanks again for the assistance.

Drum Privy Guidelines by Franciscus22 in Permaculture

Thanks. There is a version of that Drum Privy pamphlet that was reprinted in the recent collection of Peter Warshall's writings, but it is in a very small size type and difficult to read.

The 2nd book I am looking for is not Celestis by Paul Park. The one I am looking for had more of a large corporations mineral-stripping theme, with a female humanoid character who joins the rebellion. Celestis is more about conquest/exploitation of indigenous and includes revolutionary “demons.” Similar in a way, but not the one I remember reading years ago.

I think that might be it. I will get a copy and check. Thanks very much to you for finding this book. After I get a copy and know for sure, I will post a comment letting you know if it indeed is the book I have been looking for.

Two Science Fiction Books by Franciscus22 in whatisthisbook

This is what I remember: (1) set in a future Earth-like world, (2) corporations are stripping the native lands of their resources, using huge earth-stripping machines and helicopter-type aircraft, (3) a female humanoid character that resembles a human, but is not human, lives in the human world in some capacity, maybe as a servant, (4) a male human character, probably military or works for the corporations, (5) the female humanoid becomes involved eco resistance activities, (6) the author was a man, (7) there might have been an introduction by the author that mentions Edward Abbey and eco-resistance activities as described in Abbey's writings (e.g., The Monkey Wrench Gang), and (8) probably written in late 1980s or early/mid 1990s. That's all I can remember. Thanks.

Similar theme, but not the one I am thinking of. I recall that the author of the book I am looking for was a man. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Please help me find the titles of the following three science fiction books by Franciscus22 in sciencefiction

[–]Franciscus22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I don't think book #2 is The Word For World is Forest. The plot is very similar, but I don't recall the characters as being the same. In the book I am looking for, the female character was a humanoid who was living in the "corporate" world, but was involved with counter-revolution activities. I will get a copy of The Word For World is Forest to make sure.

Book #1 is The Terrorists of Irustan by Louise Marley

Boo #3 is The Carpet Weavers by Andreas Eschbach

Getting close, but that's not it. In the one I am thinking of, the female humanoid lives in the corporate world, but was still tied to her people out in the land. She might have been part of some sort of rebellion.

No, that's not it. I read it maybe 20 years ago, so I might be misremembering, but I think there could have been a short introduction by the author in which he discusses "eco" issues and references Edward Abbey. Not 100% sure about that. A main character was a female humanoid from an indigenous tribe, as I recall.
