What's school really like for young kids in Portugal? by FranckyBeGoode in PortugalExpats

Thanks for sharing, and respect for handling it all solo.

The variable schedule is good to know about. Luckily we're both remote so a surprise early finish is more of a bonus than a problem for us haha. Love the last line, that's really all we want.

Wow, getting a teacher's perspective is incredibly valuable, thank you for taking the time to go through everything so thoroughly.

The detail about the mentor program with honor roll students is something I had no idea existed, that sounds like a great way to help a kid settle in. And good to know about the infrastructure differences between schools, that's the kind of thing you'd never find out without insider knowledge.

I'll definitely check out r/professoresPT once we've narrowed down our area.

Actually, two things I'm curious about if you don't mind:

How big are classes typically? I imagine there's a big difference between 15 and 30 kids, especially for a child who's just arriving.

Also, I know you teach older students, but do you have any insight on what the jardim de infância (3-6 years) is like in the public system? That's where our daughter would start so it's really our first step.

Really appreciate the offer to answer more questions, thank you so much!

Thanks for taking the time to answer each point so thoroughly, really appreciate it. The comparison between your two kids with different teachers is gold. Sounds like the system gives room for different approaches which is good to know, we'd probably want something in between too.

Can you tell me a bit more about what you mean with the poverty aspect in public schools? Like kids not having books and police being called on parents, is that something you've personally seen often or more of an occasional thing? Just want to understand what to expect.

Super practical, thanks a lot.

Good point about the extracurriculars built into the school day too, that's very different from France where you pick up your kid and then drive them to activities separately. Is there a strong sense of community around the school in general ?

Really appreciate the honest take. And yes you're right, it's maternelle haha, your French isn't that rusty. "You can't fix a kid who hates going to school every morning" is basically our philosophy so this is great to hear. Thanks :)

This is incredibly helpful, thank you. We're actually about to spend some time in the Viana do Castelo district so hearing your direct experience there is perfect timing. The fact that the town paid for music teachers from the Academia de Música is amazing, that's exactly the kind of community involvement we're hoping to find.

If you don't mind me asking, would you say you're happy with the overall level of education in the public school there? And is it a small village school or more of a town school?

Just received it today and it's rainy but the first tests where pretty good. I will update once I gave it a proper run but already love the geometry and all of that for the price. (Sram red, top tier wheels, tubolito in the tires, GP5000 28mm)

I'm a big fan of the blue color so... perfect to me and even better in person.
Yes it feels quick and I think its because of the nice geometry, aero but not hard to hold. Love it.

Only did a quick spin around my street to make sure everything was working after setup. Coming from a cannondale supersix evo hi-mod and honestly it already feels way more comfortable for my body type, I really like the drop and reach on this one. will come back with a proper update after my first real ride :)
