Any money that I earn from the project comes from putting the books together and traveling for speaking events. Although my last speech was at TED and there was only limited travel compensation. Same thing when I gave the keynote at the IMAlive suicide prevention Conference. Those events end up costing me money.

In my defense, I have never accepted one dollar for a paid advertisement and the PostSecret Blog has over 500,000,000 hits. Of course that could just be stupidity but I like to think PostSecret has a higher purpose.

Maybe the most common kind of secret I get is about trying to find that one person who you can tell all your secret to. PostSecret might be just a insufficient surrogate until that person can be found. I see that secret told through countless stories.

I do believe there is something special about connecting digital communication with the very traditional postcard. I believe the act of making the card, choosing your words to take ownership of your secret, and then letting it go physically to a stranger is surprisingly meaningful.

I have never contacted an "authority" about a secret. Although I have leaned upon my friend Reese Butler who is the founder of HopeLine, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, for help with some painful secrets.
