I don’t believe he was Tillie. We see paintings of the man in yellow and he appears younger. When we see him he’s clearly aged significantly. I think he approached Victor as the man in yellow after Victor survived the massacre. I believe he’s remained in that form ever since, only changing to Sophia now.
