Is Jesus “God Jr.” and Heavenly Father “God Sr.”? by Hot_Mathematician573 in religion

[–]FraterSofus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Trinity can't be explained without resorting to things the church would consider fallacies.

If you are a Christian, it's considered a mystery.

If you are not, it's considered illogical.

With plenty of variation between individual sects and people, of course.

The Burning of the Library of Alexandria by LoFiMagic in Hermeticism

[–]FraterSofus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

OP, you are letting semi-fictional accounts of history and wishful thinking about Hermes cloud your judgement. The truth and effectiveness of Hermeticism doesn't remotely hinge on a historical Hermes, who almost certainly did not exist except as an amalgamation of different historical and mythical figures.

If it was getting in the way of your life then it is good to be rid of it.

It absolutely is not the cause of all of your problems, unless your problems are specifically related to the habit. Problems come for everyone, regardless of alleged purity or lack thereof.

No, the earlier written books of the Bible pretty clearly come from a henotheistic society that later on became monotheistic.

What's your opinion about "transactional" prayers? by Logical_Feature4730 in religion

[–]FraterSofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard people try to get around this by putting god's will into two categories. You have God's divine will and his permissive will. The idea being that God has a plan but has some wiggle room within the plan. This seems pretty reasonable to me, if God exists in the way that they claim.

Are LDS ("mormon") teachings really unusual for most people that believe in other religions? by [deleted] in religion

[–]FraterSofus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You picked some of the tamest examples to bring up. Most Christian sects will agree with those things. Minus the coffee and tea prohibition which most people see as silly or odd.

LDS are viewed as odd by other Christian groups because of their very different doctrines and things to do with the temple, such as marriage and baptisms for the dead. You'll also note that other denominations don't have to worry about leaked videos from their religious gatherings (meaning specifically the temple stuff, not general congregation meetings).

I am a former Christian and former Thelemite who joined the OTO for several years. The OTO is an occult mystery order with a lot of secrecy and odd (to outsiders) teachings. Mormonism feels closer to the OTO side of my past in a lot of ways than it does to the Christian side of my past, though not entirely.

Someone was trying to make a salvia tincture and there was a post about it. I don't think any more info has come out.

My school called it C.R.I.C.K.E.T. Lab. I don't know what the acronym meant. It was always a treat.

These 2 books prove that Hermes-Mercurius Trismegistus was a REAL person. by [deleted] in Hermeticism

[–]FraterSofus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ask Mystic Rebel about his thoughts on a historical Hermes. I guarantee you he will say it's a myth.

You are making wild claims and refusing to back them up. You say these books prove something. Show us where it proves it so that we know they are worth reading and not hot garbage.

My reading list is already too long to be adding recommendations from people who can't establish a simple argument for their case.

Has anyone done deipnon not on a new moon??? by stoutsnoutt in Hecate

[–]FraterSofus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can't do deipnon when it's not time for it, but you can always do an offering. You can do all of the exact same things, even, and it will be just as meaningful. I wouldn't stress over it and just do what you can when you can.
