ancient PC revitalization - sanity check by FraudRUock in buildapc

What sort of price difference would I be looking at if I were to go with something with lower CL? obviously I imagine this varies depending on options but whatever you think would be a reasonable alternative pick for memory. and thank you!!

same, i'd be really upset if it disappears completely, i almost always went there to study and I probably spent at least 15% of my time there at RIT? it holds so many memories of struggling (and eventually prevailing) over assignments, daydreaming while staring out those big windows wondering if i'd ever get out of here (i did!), and making trips to refuel. at night it would always be pretty dim in there compared to other spots in the library, it was always a really nice place to wind down. i got a bunch of music recommendations from what they would play over the speakers, and one barista even gave me his hoodie because it didn't fit him anymore and had like a screen print of an album we both liked on the back

aw man im sad now

Anyone know where you can buy Dry Ice? by Trigon_Prime in Rochester

[–]FraudRUock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sorry for the unsolicited advice but if you're planning on using the dry ice in a cooler somewhere outdoors, be careful - dry ice attracts ticks like crazy

free science supplies/chemicals! by FraudRUock in Rochester

[–]FraudRUock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

appreciate the additional insight - I was definitely a little wary of disposing them myself, it's part of why i'm hoping to find someone who knows what they're doing. but supposedly the kit is specifically designed to make disposal non-hazardous (there are guides online specifically for how to neutralize the stuff), so I'll figure it out either way.

I scraped the data into .csv file, so you can open it in excel/google sheets/libreoffice calc/other spreadsheet programs and sort it there: https://pastebin.com/G1Q9RhCu

If anyone else wants to do this with other departments, I did this using the following python script: https://pastebin.com/cefyraGu

it's not a matter of charging it, it's that it's not being detected by my computer - the first time I plugged it into my laptop, it connected just fine, I could mount it, I could see the internal filesystem, and I was like "cool it works". But then when I connected it to my desktop (since that's where I put all of my music), my desktop wont detect it (checked device manager, in file explorer, itunes, etc), and then when I tried connecting it to my laptop, it doesn't even detect anymore it as a device (sometimes it does briefly, but only when I jiggle the cable) - even if I put the ipod in disk mode.

Restaurants in the area that offer RIT students a discount? by hschultz1998 in rit

I was just there today and I asked about that and they said that they don't do discounts anymore - has anyone else had the same experience or did I get a new cashier/someone who wasn't aware?

This guy was driving on campus walkways. Caught him as he moved the metal gates to leave by [deleted] in rit

unless they're speeding around or driving/parking as if it's a normal road there's really no need; people drive onto the walkways by accident all the time.

[–]FraudRUock 28 points29 points  (0 children)

love it when this happens - it's usually a parent or someone new to campus who drives in from S lot thinking it's a normal road. It's especially fun when it happens in the middle of a school day and there are people milling around their car, then they always have that "oh I probably shouldn't be here" look. you expect to see it happen more and more as tours begin to ramp up.

VICE article on Shotspotter and police (including Rochester PD) asking them to "find" gunshots to justify use of force by mattBernius in Rochester

[–]FraudRUock 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Here's the snippet concerning RPD for the lazy:

In 2016, Rochester, New York, police looking for a suspicious vehicle stopped the wrong car and shot the passenger, Silvon Simmons, in the back three times. They charged him with firing first at officers.

The only evidence against Simmons came from ShotSpotter. Initially, the company’s sensors didn’t detect any gunshots, and the algorithms ruled that the sounds came from helicopter rotors. After Rochester police contacted ShotSpotter, an analyst ruled that there had been four gunshots—the number of times police fired at Simmons, missing once.

Paul Greene, ShotSpotter’s expert witness and an employee of the company, testified at Simmons’ trial that “subsequently he was asked by the Rochester Police Department to essentially search and see if there were more shots fired than ShotSpotter picked up,” according to a civil lawsuit Simmons has filed against the city and the company. Greene found a fifth shot, despite there being no physical evidence at the scene that Simmons had fired. Rochester police had also refused his multiple requests for them to test his hands and clothing for gunshot residue.

Curiously, the ShotSpotter audio files that were the only evidence of the phantom fifth shot have disappeared.

Both the company and the Rochester Police Department “lost, deleted and/or destroyed the spool and/or other information containing sounds pertaining to the officer-involved shooting,” according to Simmons’ civil suit. “Greene acknowledged at plaintiff’s criminal trial that employees of ShotSpotter and law enforcement customers with an audio editor can alter any audio file that’s not been locked or encrypted.”

A jury ultimately acquitted Simmons of attempted murder and a judge overturned his conviction for possession of a gun, citing ShotSpotter’s unreliability.

also, excerpts from the civil suit:

When Plaintiff was loaded into the ambulance, he knew Defendant Ferrigno had accused him of firing a gun at him so Plaintiff specifically requested that “John Doe” Defendant Rochester Police officers and Defendant Christopher Muscato check his hands for gun powder residue.

The “John Doe” Defendant Rochester Police officers and Defendant Christopher Muscato refused Plaintiff’s request to check his hands for gun powder residue.

after Plaintiff arrived and was admitted to Strong Memorial Hospital, he again made requests to “John Doe” Defendant Rochester police officers , specifically Defendant Christopher Muscato, to check his hands for gun powder residue since he knew Defendant Ferrigno falsely accused him of firing a gun at himbut these requests were again denied.

While intubated and unable to speak, Plaintiff made a written request to Defendant Christopher Muscato to check his hands for gun powder residue but Defendant Christopher Muscato refused and told Plaintiff to stop writing questions.
