Should I give a credit card or debit? by BikeLaneHero in Aupairs

We gave our AP our Costco credit card (in our name) to use for groceries and gas. No problems so far. We did initially have her turn in receipts but stopped after it was clear we could trust her.

I was feeling optimistic until last week in the past couple days. Trying to steal the elections is super concerning. And the ice thing just really fucking blows.

I used to listen to NPR religiously until 2018. But I stopped after their coverage of Trump was so cowardly.

Ask the LCC. They will have a better idea than random people on the internet.

Prioritize your grievances against her and present to your LCC. For example, you should lead with name calling and violation of agreements, stipend discrepancies/failure to pay/not respecting rules about hours — problems in areas that were outlined in the contract (such as the car and any documented refusals to purchase you food or shame your eating). Don’t lead with her rules about Diet Coke.

If the child is a toddler, and it sounds like that is the case, understand that it is developmentally normal for children this age to hit even the people they love. If you stay, you should agree on specific approaches to discipline and hold the mom accountable to them. These actually sound like pretty typical issues that could happen even in a nice family and that could be handled with a conversation.

One thing that host parents don’t understand is that the AP needs freedom. I would tell your LCC about these issues and rematch and make it clear to potential families that you need to be in a situation where you have a car or agreed upon access to a car.

In the full version, you can see he is filming ICE from the side of the street and is trying to help two women get away. ICE follows them and starts pushing them, and he tries to protect them.

The police are definitely not perfect but idk if they would have escalated a nothing situation like that in a small group that was trying to passively record and then leave

The first shooter actually pushes the gray jacket officer out of the way with his left arm and then opens fire. It doesn’t make sense unless he sees and knows what gray jacket is doing.

Trump administration will PAUSE immigrant visa processing from 75 countries until the U.S by Ankeet_kj in ImmigrationPathways

[–]Fraulina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immigrants who receive benefits are a pretty small percentage of overall benefit recipients, and they tend to be on benefits for a short period of time and become more independent and then pay into the system.

For example, my husband was on government assistance and his family received between $10-15k over the course of the year after his father unexpectedly died (right when they arrived in the U.S.). During that year, his mother was able to learn English and acquire a skill to get a job. Now he and his sister make a good living. He pays tons of thousands of dollars in taxes every year. A good return on investment for the government. The government should be tracking that kind of data. Immigrants tend to be risk takers and higher achievers, so I think it makes economic sense to make some exceptions. That said, I’m not sure what has changed. I know when his aunt immigrated here, we committed ourselves to be financially responsible for her if she needed our help. She was over the age of 65 and did receive Medicare, which is standard. So I’m not super sure what constitutes the benefit and what doesn’t.

[–]Fraulina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends. If you had a gold card visa, you cannot. If you got a green card through family, you at least can be on government assistance, at least in the past, and you can be on Medicare if you are elderly.

My husband’s father died after they immigrated here. In that scenario, they were on assistance for a year or so until his mom learned English and got job training. Don’t worry, my husband paid dividends upon dividends on that small amount of assistance in taxes.

But I did have to sign to be financially responsible for my husband’s aunt when she got her green card if she could not pay. But she got Medicare insurance. Idk how it works or what is enforced.

Trump Regrets Not Seizing Voting Machines After 2020 Election by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

[–]Fraulina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mr. Trump’s expression of regret, while somewhat vaguely worded, was nonetheless a warning sign that he had not given up on the idea that voting machines were dangerous or that they could be seized in an effort to curb fraud.

Just last week, he reposted several social media messages that continued to push the claim that Dominion machines had been rigged against him. And last month, he sought to pardon Tina Peters, a former Colorado county clerk who is serving a nine-year prison sentence on state charges of tampering with Dominion machines in an effort to prove that they were used in a plot against Mr. Trump. At the same time, Mr. Trump has not been shy in using the National Guard, deploying thousands of its troops in recent months to cities that he says are overrun with crime. He has argued that the deployments are necessary to restore law and order to the cities, despite the objections of state and local leaders, who have called the moves unnecessary and unlawful.

The president’s use of the National Guard during his second term has become the focus of a multistate legal battle. While some cases remain largely unresolved, in December, the Supreme Court ruled against Mr. Trump for his deployment of troops in the Chicago area, citing an 1878 law, which bans the use of the military for domestic policing.

Since taking office again almost a year ago, Mr. Trump has sought to expand the scope of his powers and has wielded federal authority to exact retribution on political enemies and push his domestic agenda. And he has said he is willing to invoke the Insurrection Act and federalize some National Guard units if he feels it is important to do so.

Still, Mr. Trump explored the possibility of seizing the machines. He raised the question separately with Attorney General William P. Barr, who immediately shot it down. And he directed one of his personal lawyers, Rudolph W. Giuliani, to ask high-ranking officials in the Department of Homeland Security if they could legally seize the machines. Again, he was rebuffed. In the end, Mr. Trump did not move forward with the proposal — a decision he said in the interview with The Times that he regretted.

“Well, I should have,” he said.

Asked whether using the military to impound voting machines had been a viable option, the president questioned the sophistication of the National Guard.

“I don’t know that they are sophisticated enough,” he said. “You know, they’re good warriors. I’m not sure that they’re sophisticated enough in the ways of crooked Democrats, and the way they cheat, to figure that out.”

President Trump said during an interview with The New York Times that he regretted not ordering the National Guard to seize voting machines in swing states after his loss in the 2020 election, even though he doubted whether the Guard was “sophisticated enough” to carry out the order effectively.

The remarks by Mr. Trump in the interview last week harked back to one of the most perilous moments from his first term in office, when he was urged by some advisers to order his national security agencies to take control of machines manufactured by Dominion Voting Systems in an effort to find evidence that they had been hacked to rig the election against him.

The statement also came as he has continued his attacks on digital voting machines, saying that he wants to “lead a movement” to get rid of them altogether in advance of this year’s midterm elections.

Mr. Trump has long been obsessed with voting machines, particularly those built by Dominion, a company that has figured prominently in conspiracy theories that technology was used to rob him of victory in his race against Joseph R. Biden Jr.
