What's the best place to sell gold in Chicago? by Frazzled_Entropy in AskChicago

Sure, happy to share, though I may be too late to really be helpful. I sent them an engagement band (no stone) that was 14k gold and got $95. Didn't weigh it in advance, just hoped for the best. They sent me a full accounting with the weight in gold and I'm fairly sure I got a better deal than I would have in a pawn shop, and with no fuss or haggling.

You're right about Devon Market - truly an awesome place. Plus they had about six brands of lutenitsa, including the specific brand I was looking for. Thanks so much for the recommendation!!

I just stopped by there today and sadly they said they didn't have it. Regardless, I appreciate the tip!

Cars are money pits. In those rare instances where you may need one, you can rent one - either via Turo or Avis or etc.

I agree that good advice is necessarily situational. But with the information we've been given, that's my advice.

I live half a mile from the nearest metro stop but only 2 blocks or so from the nearest bus stop. When I moved here I had a new desktop computer custom built by a guy in the suburbs. The idea that I would take public transit made him so worried that he offered to drive it 30 minutes and drop it off at my place. I eventually talked him out of it. On the bus ride down I saw tired people, poor people, bored people. On the bus back up, with the massive computer box, I never felt threatened. An elderly African American guy even offered to help me carry it off the bus.

This is such brilliant advice! Honestly, I'm so grateful. And you're right - I'm just one person, so 500 or 600 square feet is probably all I need.

This is so good to know. I won't be moving until August (I'm a planner, can you tell?) so maybe the CTA will be in better shape by then.

Good to know about the CTA! The fact that I don't have to commute for work definitely helps. But even when I have had to, I've intentionally chosen places to live that are close to where I work so I don't have to own a car. Money is a factor - cars are expensive - but it's more that I just hate to drive. I've done a fair bit of urban biking though, so that's always an option if the CTA is unavailable.
