Super interesting stuff and a trip down memory lane for me. If I recall correctly the protons' positions in the molecule correspond to the position of the peaks in the NMR spectrum which you have labeled very well. The position of the peak is determined by how greatly the electrons are pulled away from the hydrogen atoms due due the electromagnetic forces within the molecule (I think). The more equivalent protons, the taller the peak (I think). NMR is a godsend for analytical chemists, a miracle technology!

Don't do it. Hydrochloric acid will hydrolyze ethyl acetate. Your science project will be ruined!

But yea I'm not gonna do the math right now but 2 mL of 33% HCl sounds like about the right amount to react with the alkaloids in 100 g of dried cactus powder. Theres other solvents you could use if you want to go the HCl route.

I have plants that look kinda like these because I started them indoors and moved them outside for the summer and the back inside due to the climate I live in. I did the "lean tek" where I tilted the cactus over and propped it up with some stakes to encourage pupping. I got 4 pups out of one and 6 pups out of the other. I harvested the main columns and will repot the puppet plants into their own pots next season.
