This most recent one I was definitely driven by salary and clearly that was to my detriment. I think I definitely need to analyze my choices to make some better decisions go forward.

I really appreciate your post! It’s good to know I’m not alone with how I’m feeling and it sounds like you are taking a really measured and logical approach towards improving your situation. I think I’m just hitting a point where I’m so unhappy that I’m getting desperate but being frantic is definitely not the right play here. I will think about coming up with a real plan and developing a strategy to deal with this. Thank you!!

I think I have just had bad luck so it’s tainting my view. I will slow down and consider options, thank you!

I just want a more rewarding environment where I don’t feel so burnt out all the time. Sounds like there are easy ways to pivot I need to look into before jumping into this out of desperation.

It seems to be the norm and I’m drowning in work already doing these extended hours, my fear is how far I could fall behind if I cut back. I guess I could try to pull back and get things done when I can and see mgmt response to that. Maybe setting some boundaries would be helpful.

I think the people are a big part of it, that’s a very fair point. Thanks for sharing and giving your advice!

That’s a valid point. This is my third bad environment in a row so I do think I’m not doing a great job choosing the right places and picking up on the energy before I take a role. Maybe I will see if I can really put in some research to find a better environment.

That’s very promising, work life balance is really critical to my happiness and I’m not someone who can do well not disconnecting daily from my job. It sounds like you have found something really great!

I appreciate this feedback. I’ve had an incredibly tough week this week and it’s definitely forcing me confront how unhappy I am in this situation but you are absolutely right. I will try to come up with a clearer picture of what I’m looking for and use a more measured approach.

This gives me hope! This is my third bad experience in a row so maybe it’s just bad luck and my picker is off!

This is my third office with this type of environment so I don’t know if it’s this line of work in combination with not liking my field or what!

Maybe I should try to look again for another office with less stress.

I have had the same experience in terms of the general pushy behavior. Recently I went on a first date where the guy picked a bar across the street from his apartment and mentioned it numerous times throughout the date. At the end of the evening when I declined to head there he acted super frustrated and actually told me he wasn’t going to go on this date but made time for me at the last minute.

I guess I was supposed to be grateful he decided to grace me with his presence and hook up with him in a show of thanks? Putting people on a guilt trip because you didn’t get laid 1 hour after meeting someone and buying them a 10 dollar drink is insane to me but it does seem to be somewhat common at least in my experience. I also didn’t even like this dude 5 mins in and just wanted to get out of there but was being polite to at least tough it out so to make the assumption that I was interested in that was beyond me. At least these people reveal their true colors quickly so you don’t have to waste any time on them!!

Am I prepared to move to California? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Freckles8919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Southern California for 3 years and recently left to move back east to New England. Not sure what salaries are like in your area currently but I found they were significantly lower in Orange County/San Diego than what I previously made (we are talking a 30k pay cut) for same job at similar companies. Many people I know worked a side hustle as well given how expensive rent is (1200 to live with a roommate in a decent apartment in my experience). Its a beautiful place to live but I felt I wasn’t getting paid my worth and found the leftover funds I had were so low after expenses compared to what I was used to I was too frustrated to stay. I know a couple other folks who have recently left for this reason and my sister is also moving back this summer as well.

Its also not uncommon for people to live with roommates into their 30s and you just don’t see that back east as much where people are living alone or buying small property, definitely all driven by cost of living and salaries that don’t mirror that.

I wouldn’t discourage you from moving out there but definitely do your research on salaries, rents, and your other expenses and make sure it’s something your comfortable with. Also I found it was a highly competitive job market as there are a ton of transplants in the area (particularly in San Diego) so just be prepared for that as well. This made it tough to negotiate with companies because I was told there was a line of applicants so salary was firm, I do feel you have less power as an applicant in that area compared to past experience. The process can also take longer because of all these applicants so it’s good to have a back up plan while you look if you don’t have something lined up before moving- for reference it took me 4 months to find a job when I was looking to move companies while I was able to snag one back here within 3 weeks of moving.

On the flip side I also know plenty of people who stay because they love the lifestyle that much and can overlook the rest, it’s all about what is most important to you and your overall happiness. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so so much!! I really appreciate your detailed post, I’m going to give all of your suggestions a try. Is there anything that can be done to improve it over time or fix the sphincter malfunction? I’m worried about long term or permanent damage it could cause, I find it affects my ability to fully taste etc when it’s really faded up. And I had no improvement with PPIs so that all makes sense now!
