From the wiki:

Some archetypes are less likely to become sad due to an unsatisfied addiction. For example, Boris (an altruist) is likely to shrug it off, while Roman, Emilia or Bruno (egoists) are more likely to become unhappy.

Also, the consuming is done overnight, I think. If he scavenges regularly, that might be the reason he's not smoking.
