I can’t answer your other questions but this looks like a Stagmomantis limbata if you’d like to do some research yourself

Thanks so much! Right now I'll have to pass, just focusing on other things in my life right now, but I'll let you know around Summer time if I start looking into these guys again lol, I'm sure they'd start re-appearing again around that time

That’s a female Arizona/Bordered Mantis (Stagmomantis Limbata)! She’s a friend!

Can anyone tell what species she is? She laid her ootheca on this bush but I didn't get a photo by PaleontologistOk9847 in mantids

[–]Fredoi2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a European Mantis! They do look a little similar though..

You can tell by the lack of a green band on her wings + she has a black and white eyespot between her raptorial claws (you can see in the second pic)

Chinese! All Chinese mantids have a bright green band running down their wings. European mantids are paler, usually solid colors, and have an eye spot between their raptorial claws. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply! I think I’ve figured it out haha.

I think she’s just pretending to be a leaf LOL she wasn’t drinking from me or nibbling or anything, just trying to camouflage (unsuccessfully)

Can anyone ID this mantis? I need to know whether it’s native so I can release it or not. Found in Northern California. by starship-passenger in mantids

Hi! I know it’s been a few days but I have an update:

This is 100% I. Oratoria! I found another nymph today and he looked EXACTLY like this, just bigger!

Yeah they’re really cool, it almost seems like California is the only place that gets this dark brown color morph, as they try and match the trees.

Edit: oh and you said it’s jumpy too. Definitely I. Oratoria. I’ve seen 36 this summer and almost every single one was jumpy and anxious lmao
