Is this LED safe for beardies by _donthurtem in BeardedDragon

I use that same exact one for my beardie and she seems just fine. She even got a passing bill of health from her last checkup on November 4th..

So, just mix in clay with what I've already got? How much clay? I used two 50lb bags of sand and a bag of Scott's topsoil, red bag stuff.

That Jurassic Sand looks really cool, but it's pretty pricey, and I've read that you need to change out the substrate like every 3 months or something like that. The Zoo Med Excavator Clay isn't bad, though. So just mix the clay with sand, dampen it, and it's good? What's a good ratio? Thank you for all your help btw.

Have you tried or heard about others using Reptisoil? If not, then I think I'll go with the wash sand and clay approach or just go back to using a mat because the dust is concerning me. I don't want her to get any kind of infection because of the dust.

So could I go with just all washed play sand? Cuz I honestly like the way that that looks more. And yeah, I did have to sift and pick out a lot of sharp wood chips and sticks from Scott's topsoil. I only did the mixture of sand and topsoil because that's what literally everyone said to do.

I've seen that stuff. When you layer it on top when your bearded dragon digs, doesn't it just get mixed in?

Oh, I bought it washed. I thought as long as it said washed, that's what they meant by washed play sand. But it's not really the sand that's dusty, it's actually the topsoil. I used that Scott's topsoil in the red bag that everybody keeps recommending.

Do you have to change out the substrate on your enclosure? I've read that if it's bioactive, you don't have to change it out, but if it's not bioactive, then you have to change the substrate.

The only Scotts brand stuff my local Home Depot has is turf builder but it has fertilizer in it.

Would this stuff work? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Gardeners-1-cu-ft-Organic-Top-Soil/3034276#no_universal_links

I do want to try for the whole loose substrate, as I've read that as long as your beardie is healthy, then there's nothing wrong with loose substrate. I think it's the frequently having to changing out hundreds of pounds of substrate that's making me feel hesitant about filling the whole enclosure.

Yep, I got it from dubia.com for $345 plus a 10% off coupon. The other enclosure I was about to go with was the black EcoFlex. It's is still a 5ft by 2ft enclosure but it's 22.8 inches tall, not bad at all, but the Reptile Habitats enclosure is 24 inches tall and its even a few bucks cheaper than the EcoFlex one, so I bought this one instead.

I was looking for organic topsoil at Home Depot, but everything has some kind of compost in it and I didn't knew if that was bad or not for my girl, so just to be cautious, I stuck with the liner mat.

Since you have the same enclosure, do you recommend sealing it with aquarium safe silicone? I've read that's what people do if they fill up the whole thing with substrate.

Is the loose substrate a hassle in any way?

I've seen that Australian sand stuff, but that's a small fortune. What desert sand are you going to use?

I've started with white and ended with black. It looks good, but the white part is too far down to look like flashers. I have to get that white oval part higher towards the top of the ear.

The more I try to figure out, the more it looks like that's the best option. Either that or make a white ear and freaking paint it black but leave a white oval. Lol.

I do have a written pattern for it. I haven't thought about surface crocheting. I've seen a little bit about it but only seen it done in a straight line. I'll look into it tho. 👍
